House Mourns Members Death OTTAWA (CP) -- The Com- mons adjourned its a f t e r noon sitting Tuesday in mourning for the death of a member -- one who had driven through the night to get back to his duties as ar MP. William Anderson, 55-year-old Progressive Conservative mem- ber' for Waterloo South, suf- fered a heart attack in his par- liamentary office shortly before the starl of the morning sitting of the House and died later in hocpital. In suggesting that the Com- mons adjourn, Prime Minister Diefenbaker said: "By our adjournment we re- veal in a tangible way some- thing of the feelings that are ours and at the same time do that which he would have ex- pected us to do, namely to carry on our responsibilities." The Commons had been back to its full 265-member strength only since the May 29 byelec- tions in Esquimalt - Saanich, B.C.; Leeds, Ont.; Kings, PEI and Restigouche - Madawaska, N.B. With the death of Mr. Ander- son, who first came to the Com- mons in the general election of 1957, the standing is: Progres- sive Conservatives 204, Liberals 51, CCF 8, New Party 1, Va- cant 1. Odeon Theatres Mark Anniversary Odeon Theatres' first 20 years during which it built many of Canada's finest theatres and introduced Canadians to the pleasure of British pictures, were years of challenge and fulfilment. Paul Nathanson, who still has motion picture and television interests and controls some out- standing business organizations in general life, was Odeon's first president. His father, the late N. L. Nathanson, who joined Paul at Odeon when he re- signed the presidency of Famous Players, did more than any other person to build the modern Canadian theatre busi- ness. The Hon. J. Earl Lawson, KC, who succeeded Paul as presi- dent and operations chief in 1946, had been Minister of Na- tional Revenue up to 1940 in the cabinet of the Rt. Hon. R. B. Bennett, later Lord Bennett, Mr. Lawson died in 1950 and L. W. Brockington, CMG, QC, one of Canada's most notable citizens and special assistant in wartime to Prime Minister W. L. M. King, became president. It was Brockington, said Lord Rank, who was responsible for his decision to enter the Cana- dian field. In Sept, 1960, Brockington announced his retirement from the presidency and C. R. B. Salmon, MC, CA, the executive vice-president, who had come to, the Rank group of Canadian companies in 1951, was named to succeed him. At the same time, J. S. D. Tory, OBE, QC, 8JD, a director of many Cana- dian companies and a leader in public service organizations, be- came chairman of the board as successor to John Davis, Lon- don, vice-chairman and director of the Rank Organization. Tory and Salmon lead what is considered to be one of the outstanding circuit operational teams in the country. Vice-presi- dent and General Manager is Frank H. Fisher, an industry veteran who came into the busi- ness in Calgary in 1926. He joined Odeon in 1945 as Chief Buyer and booker after resign- ing as assistant general sales manager of Empire - Universal Films Ltd. Assistant general manager is E. W. Forsyth, son of a leading executive in the British motion picture industry, James For- syth, OBE. He came from the British Rank section to his present post in 1952 and was recently made a member of the board. Odoen now operate theatres in practically all major cities and towns across Canada including two in Oshawa, the Plaza and| the Biltmore.
