MARY HAWORTH'S MAIL Woman Asks How To Deal With Gossiping Relative problem may seem odd to you, but it has brought me a lot of] deep sorrow and concern. My mother lost her parents at the age of four. Having no other| relatives in this country, she| was placed in a county home for children and later taken by a couple who reared her as a fos- ter daughter. These were my so-called grandparents. What To Pack In Picnic Basket There's nothing like having your picnic gear organized and ready to go when the summer outdoor season arrives. If everything is assembled in one central spot, the spur-of-the- moment picnic won't be pre- ceded by the usual mad rush and scramble, with all hands weary before the outing starts. The planned-in-advance pienic, too, will take a minimum of time to co-ordinate. Included in your special cache should be all the conventional picnic equipment -- vacuum bottle or jug, paper plates, cups and napkins, plastic knives, forks and spoons. In addition, you should have the where- withal to ward off insects] soothe insect bites, sunburn, the aftereffects of eating--all occupational hazards o fthe pic- nic, unfortunately. For cuts and scratches, you'll need an antiseptic and plastic bandage strips. Take repellent to ward off the bugs. A box of that old standby, soda bicarbonate, should take care of the other potential picnic problems and hazards. Dust soda on your legs, for example, before venturing into the woods or fields--the favorite haunt of chiggers--and you won't be bit- ten by these almost invisible in- sects. Should you fail to take this precaution, you can soothe the itch which follows a chigger bite by mixing a palmful of soda with- a few drops of water and applying the paste to the af- fected area. The same pro- cedure usually does a good job with mosquito and bee bites. Be- fore applying the paste to the latter, however, be sure to re- move the stinger. If overeating of the fine pic- nic care caused trouble, relieve minor cuts and scratches and it quickly by drinking a glass of water mixed with a half tea- spoon of soda bicarb. In addition to all these uses, soda plays a practical role at picnics, too. It's a good citizen who dumps soda on the fire be- fore heading for home. Even if flames appear dead, it's a wise precaution, for the soda smoth- ers the often unseen or un- suspected spark or ember. And a trick worth remember- ing, whether you're off on a pic- nic or tending the barbecue grill at home, is to scatter a iitle soda over the charcoal. slows the fire down and makes it burn evenly for a longer pe- riod. Incidentally, this is an old professional woodsmen's trick. But be careful not to dump too much soda or the fire will go out! Soda also simplifies the post- picnic cleanup. . Fill vacuum, container with water from the lake or stream, add a couple of tablespoons of soda and there won't be any of that sticky fruit pulp or milk or coffee ring to cope with later.
