16 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thursday, May 25, 1961 Brooklin Hillcrests Win Their Sr. Debut By GERRY BLAIR Brooklin Hillcrests, up from Intermediate ranks, made an auspicious debut in OLA Senior lacrosse competition when they displayed a tremendous come- back in the final three minutes to edge the Brampton Ram- blers, 6-5, last night in Brooklin. Prior to the late outburst by the Hillcrests, they hadn't reg- istered a goal since "Rock" Bat- ley put them in front, 3-2, scor- ing from a free throw with less than a minute to play in the first period. Tempers flared throughout the chippy contest, and six majors were meted out by referees, Scoop Hayes and Boyd Balk- well. Even at that, the official- ing was definitely lax at times. Don Craggs and Mike Finne- gan teed off at centre, midway through the opening stanza with both players' sweaters being yanked off. Craggs came to the rescue for Charlie Grandy, when Finnegan two-handed Charlie across the chest. Roy Woods and Clarke Pulford (brother to Toronto Maple Leaf player, Bob- by Pulford) had a set-to in the| second period, but neither com- batant managed to do much damage. The bespectacled Woods had his glasses knocked off during the fray. Charlie Grandy became involved in an- other fracas in the last frame, this time with Bruce Wanless. Grandy received gashes over the left eye and on his nose, causing blood to run freely. Barry Ashbee was the only serious casualty. He suffered a deep laceration on top of the head in the second period when accidentally highsticked. He bled profusely and had to retire for treatment, but returned a few minutes after being tempor- arily patched up. Brooklin's exciting victory put them into a virtual first place deadlock with the Ramblers. but the Hillcrests received the nod because of the perfect loss rec- ord. Brampton held the first spot in the OLA Senior circuit prior to last night's encounter by vir- tue of their 8-6 win over the heavily favored defending Mann Cup champion Port Credit Sail ors last Thursday night in Port Credit. Brooklin undoubtedly would receive a great deal of confidence from their victory in last night's tilt. Eastern Canada Professionaljset Mudie up for his first one. Terry Davis, tops for the Hill- crests with two goals, scored the second Brooklin goal, rifling a screen shot into the corner, within a space of three or four inches between netminder Jim Thompson and the goalpost.
