Request Heard AJAX (Staff) -- The Ajax Kart Club asked Ajax Council on Tuesday, for permission to con- struct a go-kart track within the boundaries of Ajax. As the request, voiced by Kart Club president Alfred Hammond, was in verbal form, council asked the speaker if he would submit a concrete plan detailing the complete operation of the track. Mr. Hammond said that the club had selected a 15-acre site on the Ajax Lakefront which bordered Parkland and Pres- tige-Industrial zones of the town. He added that they desired to lease the property for a five year term but that the owner would not let the club have the property until permission was granted from council. The one-year-old club has 27 members and during 'the past year has raced at Malton, Ba- tavia, Belleville, Trenton, St. Catharines, Cobourg and Whitby. ADJACENT AREA Councillor Owen Ashley point- ed out that by granting the club's request, council would be acting contrary to the zoning by- law, which did not allow for go- kart tracks. "Council has already establish- SEE THIS REALLY SAFE SELF-PROPELLED ROTARY LAWN-BOY AUTOMOWER 2 FULL YEARS' WARRANTY will have to amend the zoning| bylaw, then get the approval of the Ajax Planning Board, their recommendation will come back to council and finally approval will have to be sought from the Municipal Planning Board. It is no simple matter." NOTICE Reeve Robert MacKenzie ask- ed Mr. Hammond what the club would do about noise. "We have made an intense study of the proposed track," replied the president, "including prevailing winds, fencing, park- ing noise, etc., and the nearest building, the Ajax - Pickering General Hospital, is a mile and three quarters away." "We will be a non-profit mak- ing organization," said Mr. Hammond, "the track is intend- ed to be used for recreation only and no money will be made as a result of racing karts. We in- tend to turn all profits over to the town for recreational pur- poses." "Before we can grant permis- sion it will be up to you to sub- mit a concrete plan in writing to council," said Mayor Parish. Centre Store . ..
