16 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tussdey, Mey 23, 1961 BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT Currency Value May Be By FORBES RHUDE Canadian Press Business Editor] In the hectic years 1950 to 1960 the currencies of Canada and the United States lost value at a rate which, if continued, would mean halving their value in a period of 33 years. This is stated in the annual Trustees Want More Salary WINDSOR (CP) -- Ontario high school trustees decided Halved will be guest of honor and speaker at the annual meeting of the Canadian council of the International Chamber of Com- merce in Montreal Sept. 12. Fourteen pipe line contractors members of the Canadian Gas Association have informed the Monday they should get paid at least as much as municipal councillors. Kirk- wood, Erin, Montreal Vies With Toronto MONTREAL (CP) -- The {traditional rivalry between [Montreal and Toronto was ex- {tended into the fashion field when two leading Canadian |couturiers competed for plaud- lits at a private showing here. But competition was casual be general agreement that the fashions by Toronto's Rudolphe were "stunning," and of Mont- real's Raoul-Jean Foure, '"'tres chic." Adding to the gay atmosphere of the show in the ballroom of a downtown hotel were the fringed parasols, singing wait- ers and a strolling violinist. GARB FOR GAMES Modelling and music were interspersed with rhymed wit- ticisms from the pen of column- ist Doyle Klyn. A sample, for hockey games at Montreal Forum: "The wise gal wears sneakers; she sees the game through -- then makes a mad dash when the riot is due." Raoul - Jean Foure did not, however, dress his model in sneakers. She wore needle - | pointed high heels with a sleeve- less dress and sweater en- semble of rayon and cotton, in tones of turquoise, grey and |brown. Rudolphe's three-piece outfit for Maple Leaf Gardens was perhaps a little more practical and friendly. There seemed to --a black linen sult topped with a red and white polka - dotted scarf, and yellow kidskin leather coat. For weekends in Muskoka, he designed an orange and yellow apple-green slacks. For the Laurentians, Foure showed a strapless, two-piece cotton sun dress in yellow, orange and turquoise. PARTY STYLES Cocktails with Toronto's Mayor Nathan Phillips was the explanation for a gold silk and green chiffon dress under a sheer, flowing, polka - dotted coat. For a similar occasion with Montreal's Mayor Jean Drap- eau there were bouquets of Farma violets against a white background on a decorous dress of cotton. The skirt was subtly bell-shaped, a trend repeated several times in both collec- tions. An apple-green pique coat lined in white completed the outfit. Modelled for an opening night at Toronto's new O'Keefe tunic - styled fringed top over TEHRAN, Iran (AP)--A sin- gle pistol shot has changed the political picture in Iran. The shot quickly brought down the government, closed the Majlis (parliament) and set off a reform campaign. What newspapers call "Iran's white revolution" began May 2 when 60,000 teachers, dismayed by the struggle of trying to sur- vive on salaries as low as $25 a month, went on strike for higher pay. As 4,000 teachers squatted Centre was a dramatic gown of white silk sari embroidered in 14-carat gold. The blousoned top had a floating, full - length back panel. A Montrealer's night out drew a gown of egg-shell Radzimir silk with a sleeveless, scalloped |lace blouson. Reform In Iran After One Shot quietly in the sun outsid par- liament, a police officer fired point-blank into the crowd. One teacher was killed and the rev- olution was under way. Newspapers, under govern- ment pressure, at first ignored the shooting. Then students took to the streets shouting "police brutality." The teachers' plight won sym- pathy of the general public and 2 wave of indignation swept ran. SHAH FRIGHTENED Echoes of the shot reverber- ated into the royal palace. "The shah," one informed source said, "was scared out of his wits." The Iranian public, 20,000,000 strong, was in an ugly mood Adding to the discontent, and probably the biggest complaint of all, was the skyrocketing cost of living in Tehran, where Prien have jumped as much as 39 per cent while wages stayed put. The economy, after years of mismanagement, was reported in appalling shape despite $280,- 000,000 in oil revenue last year and roughly $100,000,000 in pro- grammed American aid. Premier Sharif Emani's . ernment was ousted by the in the four days of furore that followed the shooting. WANTED {RACKVOAS n his place was appointed Dr. Ali Amini, a suave aristo- crat and onetime ambassador who for years had been pl ging for free elections, elf. ciency and a crackdown on cor- ruption. Amini promised the teachers a raise and declared upen war on corruption. Four army generals were jailed and Amini pledged scores of civilian arrests. Students of 'he situation say one cause of rampant low-level corruption is that civil servants' pay is so low some must rob the till to survive. TORONTO (CP) -- A charge by Sudbury Liberal MPP Elmer Sopha that an unnamed Ontario cabinet minister is involved in organized crime may be based on hearsay, Premier Frost said Mr. Frost said he thinks Mr. Sopha's accusations are based on hearsay evidence from the trial of a former provincial po- lice officer, Robert J. Wright, charged with bribery and con- spiracy. The information was contained in the officer's diary and contained references to names used by the gamblers. Mr. Sopha was called gutless Saturday by two cabinet minis- ters for not naming the minis- ter he has in mind. Mr. Sopha, one of the lead- ers in the Liberal party's fight against organized crime, didn't name anyone when he made the statement to reporters, but he said he has evidence "that im-| plicates a cabinet minister in| the Frost government in organ. | ized crime."
