Since then he has aimed 21 books, practically all of them controversial, at the book-buy- ing public and has sold 330,000} copies. A 38-year-old self-taught news- paper man, Hebert ran into trouble with the publishers when he tried to peddle the manuscript of a book on Wil bert Coffin, who was hanged in 1955 for the murder of three American hunters in the Gaspe Peninsula, denouncing the pro- vincial government's handling of the case. J He finally had to go to Ed- gar Lesperance, a printer and distributor of adventure novel- ettes and other popular French- language publications. Lesperance tossed the Coffin book in with his regular run and it sold 13,000 copies. The pair signed a two-year contract and founded Editions de I'Homme, producing titles rang- ing from Communist China ot prison reform and selling them at $1 a copy. FORMED OWN COMPANY This month the partnership was dissolved and Hebert formed his own company, Les Editions du Jour, letting the printing contracts. Under the new arrangement, he hopes to venture into fiction and satire. The book on Red China was written by Hebert and Pierre Trudeau, also of Montreal, after] a six-week trip to the Asian country this year. It's called Deux Innocents en Chine Rouge --two Innocents in Red China. Hebert commissioned 80 per cent of the books published by the old firm. His most specta- cular success was Les Inso- lences du Frere Untel, (The Impertinences of Brother So- and-so) a witty critique of Que- bec speech and manners by, Brother Pierre-Jerome, a Mar- ist teaching brother at Alma, Que. It sold 116,000 copies. At the height of last year's provincial election campaign, Hebert published Le Chretien et les Elections, a searing con- demnation of corrupt electoral practices such as vote-buying, written by Abbes Gerard Dion and Louis O'Neill of Laval Uni- versity. "Humble workers came to us and took piles of copies to their factories and sold them," He- bert said. "People who never entered a bookstore bought cop- jes." JAIL EXPOSE The first two books published by the firm in late 1959 were Hebert's expose of conditions at Bordeaux jail near Montreal and a biography of the late Pre- mier Maurice Duplessis. The Duplessis biography, launched within weeks after the premier died, was written by] political reporter Pierre La- porte. The only Hebert publica- tion so far to be translated into English, it sold 22,000 copies in French and 5,000 in English. Hebert risked arrest to get background for the book on con- ditions in the psychiatric wing at Bordeaux. A 20-minute inter- view with some of the inmates convinced him of the truth of allegations that men were be- ing held for no apparent rea- son in overcrowded quarters. As he struggled to get the facts, an anonymous telephone caller offered him a file from the warden's office. Hebert otok it, had a photostat made and returned it within 24 hours. CHARGES DENIED The Quebec government de- nied the book's accusations but changes were quietly made in the jail's administration. Educated, travelled and self- assured, Hebert is well equipped to take the calculated risks his profession demands. Politically sop hi sticated, he knows his rights and those of others. He bucked Duplessis and his nationalist policies as early as 1954, when he started a weekly newspaper called Vrai (True). "It was called left-wing, but nobody has ever accused me of being rightist," he says. Despite this, Hebert looks slightly capitalistic in the well SR hand uvunt ana TeANCe ing treatmen the charge," the it first came up Liverpool greens have ye eered a plan that will give them a golf course right here this summer.
