MARY WATT COACHES ARMY MINORS Lady Coaches Winning Team Written for The Canadian Press By LEN TAYLOR Kitchener-Waterloo Record SOEST, Germany (CP)--The winningest hockey coach in Europe this season is a Cana- dian. This mightn't be remark- able but this coach is only five feet, two inches tall, and an- swers to the name of Mary. She is petite, brunette Mary B. Watt, wife of Signalman John Watt of the No. 4 Signals Squadron at Fourth Canadian Infantry Brigade Group here. Under her soft - voiced but fron - fisted tutelage, the Red Wings of the Canadian Army NATO brigade + minor league have moved from last place to first in a couple of months. The Red Wings are one of eight minor league teams compete in two divisions of play in the army garrison league for children of servicemen. They were an orphan team, without a name or a coach, when 31 year-old Mrs. Watt "inherited" them. UNDEFEATED COACH Under her guidance the club hasn't lost a game since it dropped its opener by a close score, It finished the schedule with a 7-1-4 record and five of the wins were shutouts. Mary Watt became a coach by accident. She went down to the rink, one of four in the bri- gade area, early this season to watch her 11-year-old son John Jr., try out for goal. She found him on a team without a coach and without club after a talk with Sgt. Harry MacKenzie of Ottawa 'l'who heads the circuit. "She's done very well," Mac- Kenzie said. "The only problem we've ever had with her is that at the referees and doesn't mind telling them." CLEAN NAILS A MUST Coach Watt has no apology to make for any loss of temper. She rates good officiating on a par with good coaching and leadership in developing minor hockey players. ; She strictly enforces the league rules that all players personal appearance and atti- tude. She inspects her boys reg- that|ularly to see that they have their hair cut properly, that they are washed 'behind the ears and have clean finger- titude. Mrs. Watt, who weighs a solid 95 pounds and has to give away some weight to many of her players, comes from Cowan, Man., but went to school in Winnipeg, Her husband, a na- army from Penticton, B.C, in 1958. A former member of the Ca- nadian Women's Army Corps, she follows simple coaching theories, most of which she got from a book. "I try to use the same sys- tem in games as I do in prac- tice. I put the emphasis on skat- ing and defensive play and I any guidance. Soon she found herself handling the orphan find the scoring takes care of itself after that." OSHAWA BOWLING NEWS LANDER .
