§ THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tisidey, April 18, 1961 7a (MARY HAWORTH'S MAIL | Dear Mary Haworth: Your discussion of the American ver- sus the European woman is very interesting. May I, a Euro- pean woman, add my comment? I have met a fair cross-sec- tion of American women during my 15 years in this country. Some I have liked very much; some not at all. I find the "friendly Ameri- can" is a bit of a myth. The proper word would be *"for- ward." Here in America women are friends while they can use one' another as social supports. Then they move on to new sup- ports. We Europeans are slow to call someone friend until we discover common ground for true friendship. I find the American woman very much concerned with her- self in every way. Not that she cannot sacrifice herself. On the contrary, she will go to fantas- tic lengths to achieve material success and social status. But mostly for her own and her fam- ¢ |ily's gain. MARRIED IN HAMILTON The Reverend Ross Murray Alloway and his bride, the former Miss Ruth Dorcas Bennett, are pictured follow- ing their marriage recently at St. George's Anglican Church, Hamilton. To me, it is very distastefu] that a young girl should tele- phone a boy for the purpose of pursuit or boss him around in any way. Perhaps some Euro- pean women are too servile, but in the main I prefer a woman who minds her place. "For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is head of the church . . . There- fore as the church is subject to Christ, so let wives to be their own husbands in everything." (Ephesians 5: 23-24). T.S. Dear T.S. You are rjght on some points, wrong rly Right, I think, in suggesting that status - seeking American women tend to be more forward than intrinsically friendly in car- rying acquaintance with other women- for expedient reasons. And right again in discerning that the average American woman's capacity for sacrifice is commensurate, usually, with her expectation of reward, sooner or later. However, I don't agree thab the contemporary American woman is more mercenary than those of other lands. It just hap-| pens that she has reaped a big-| from another country in her heart.
