SATURDAY, JANUARY 7, 1961 ONTARIO TODAY Work begins on a new factory for Ontario gineer, who is constantly meeting with businessmen to boost Ontario manufac- turing, His work and that of the Ontario representative at Chicago, made possible the start this past summer of the manu- facture in Ontario of gas-fired dryers used in coin laundries. These had been im- ported into Canada at a cost of a million dollars annually, Now some 3,000 units, selling at about $400 a unit, are being made at an Ontario plant, At Waterloo an old established firm, Ontario's Premier Frost eyes industrial future, Canada Barrels & Kegs Ltd, was looking for a new product, Mr, Campbell and the Chicago office found Crestliner Inc, Little Falls, Minn, anxious to have someone in Canada make their line of fibreglass and aluminum boats. The two companies formed Canbar Marine Co, and now 120 people are making the boats at Waterloo in a new plant which cost $250,000, They hope to sell a million dollars of boats this year, HEN the Ontario government an- nounced its plans to expand the trade and industry branch, London represen- tative Richard H, Stapleford, flew to Toronto to see Ontario companies about pushing their wares in Great Britain, Stapleford sent out 500 telegrams to lead- ing Ontario firms and followed this up with 3,000 letters, pointing out that Cana- dian salesmen are not seen at British and European trade fairs, and that there is a wide market open everywhere, As an example he pointed to increasing in- terest in central heating for homes in Great Britain, a field in which Ontario manufacturers are well represented, Mr, Campbell periodically sends out mimeographed notes on manufacturing opportunities for Ontario industries, These he obtains from the British and US, offices and Ontario manufacturers, Meet- ings are arranged between principals, and while it sometimes takes a year before arrangements are completed, new manu- facturing opportunities have been deve- loped by this method, Under the "crash program" each of the Ontario trade offices will receive more staff, recruited from specialists in industry, The Toronto headquarters will also have more staff to go around to Ontario com- munities to study their needs and manu- facturing, facilities not in full use, New products will be studied and firms found who can make them, There will be closer co-operation with the commodity spe- cialists of the federal Department of Trade and Commerce, HERE are some 10,000 manufacturing industries in Ontario, In 1959 more than 75 per cent of all Canadian imports were fully manufactured goods, The On- tario government hopes under its program to be able to cut this percentage of fully manufactured goods, "If just one-quarter of these imported goods, or about one billion dollars worth, had been made in Canada it would have given employment to 100,000 more work- ers here," Mr, Campbell emphasized, To assist Ontario businessmen to find new products which can be made here to cut the amount of imports, the trade and industry branch of the Department of Commerce and Development has re- leased booklets on "Fabrication Gaps" in Canadian industry, and export opportu- nities in the United States and Great Britain, The booklets are mostly statis- tics showing our imports of manufactured goods and such imports by both Great Britain and the United States for the past few years, 0) PAGE SEVEN It takes a special sort of man for the THE CANADIAN GUARDS As a proud Canadion Guardsman you are taught to be o specialist in many weapons, and important skills, If you are looking for an outdoor life , , . rugged, interesting and well paid , , .
