SATURDAY, JULY 30 ONTARIO TODAY Sammy and Joan before the break-up. The Loves Of Sammy BY BILL DRYLIE HE Many Loves of Doby Gillis on television could be followed some day by the May Loves of Sammy Davis Junior, for Sammy is in love again. The 130-pound Negro, now probably the world's greatest night club, entertainer, announced recently in London that he'll marry Mai Britt, the tall, blonde Swedish actress in September. Before Mai came Joan Stuart, of Toronto. Before Joan came Kim Novak of Hollywood and be- fore her there was Ava Gardner. Sammy was in love with them all. The greatest Canadian interest in Sammy Davis' love life was stirred up when he met Toronto's Joan Stuart while she was working in a Montreal club. That was love at first sight -- neither could live without the other from that day on and they said so. Davis even overcame the objections of Joan's parents to their daughter marrying a Negro and the wedding date was set. Then it was postponed, set again, delayed, and finally the wedding was off. Joan and Sammy agreed that their, two careers came first and Sammy's latest romance blew up in everybody's face, but especially in the faces of the Toronto newspaper boys who had taken it all seriously and written reams of gush about the happy couple. Now, fresh from a love that wouldn't die, but did, Davis ts romancing Mai Britt. But this time there won't be any rush to buy wedding gifts until everybody is sure there'll be one. Davis. has been married just once, to a colored girl who left him in such a hurry he almost didn't get unpacked. Since then he's always been a beau but never a bride- groom and ihe latest from Londen is that he had to find a wife because he was lonely. "A man," says Sammy, "is nothing without a wife and a home." This is pretty mild talk for Davis who set some kind of a record when he was courting Torontos Joan. In those days Davis confessed all to a movie magazine, Modern Screen told his Romeo and Juliet tale until it brought tears to the reader's eye. It was wonderful stuff for the movie. mag readers, made to order for the girls waiting to get their permanents in a thou- sand beauty salons across the country. And some of this material, I'm sure, will soon re-appear in the movie books, only this time Mai Britt will substitute for Joan Stuart. Here's what Sammy said of his days with Joan and which may be repeated for Mai: "We sat next to each other and we talked. We felt close to each other right from the beginning. Joan told me about herself. She'd led a pretty sheltered life..." Joan in those days was "this loveliest- looking of girls. . . tall, pale, blonde, green- eyed." Wrapped up in their love for each other . . Hill and looked down at the city (Mont- real), the river (St. Lawrence) .and the fields beyond." This was when Joan had indicated she'd marry him. To which Samuel answered, throwing back his head and gazing at the rusty freighters down on the river: "My God, how can one man on this earth be as. lucky as I am?" Now a few months later, after the wedding bells had been made ready and then tied up again a couple of times, Joan left for Las Vegas to see her betrothed. But Sammy was too busy to give her | much time. In Vegas were some other members of the Hollywood clan which includes Peter Lawford, Dean Martin and Shirley Maclaine. Davis is the junior member and, famous as he is himself, still CONTINUED ON PAGE 18 CAREER MEN IN KHAKI The Infantryman PAGE SEVEN Here's a job for the active man who uses his head, likes the feel of action and working in the open air.
