It was an enlightening and highly informa- tive experience, as Gar related a few excerpts from his brief, but illustrious hockey career, as a player some 20 years back. Gar came to Oshawa when he was only four years old, and like the majority of hockey players, started shortly thereafter playing in the minor leagues. His first experience with a championship club, was in 1937. as a member of the Oshawa Juveniles, winning the All-Ontario championship. Their coach was Bill Hancock, and according to Gar, he was one of the great teachers of the game. Hancock spent considerable time with his players teaching them the fundamentals of the game. He made them skate for hours at a time con- centrating on the art of keeping your head up whilst carrying the puck. The following season he elevated to the Junior "B" club and it was while playing for them that he received his big chance to perform with the famed Oshawa Generals. Roy Sawyer broke his ankle and the Generals brought Gar up from the "B's", They were in the Eastern Canada Memorial Cup finals against the Verdun Juniors. The first game for Gar with the Generals was in Maple Leaf Gardens, and his check for that game was none other than Maurice "Rocket" Richard playing with Verdun. "However," said Gar, the Rocket was being slightly overlooked in those days for a pretty good hockey player with the Generals, Billy Taylor, probably one of the most outstanding Junior "A" hockey players of any era". Gar had many words of praise for Taylor. "It was nothing for Billy to stay out and practice with us when I played Juvenile and take several of us aside, one at a time, giving us pointers on how to stickhandle." When talking with one of Gar's close friends, he told us how adept Gar was at stickhandling after receiving special attention from Taylor. Gar finished the season with the Generals, and played a big part in bringing the Memorial Cup to Oshawa, defeating Edmonton, 3 games to one at MLG. The following season, the Gen- erails again won the Memorial Cup, this time in the West, ousting Kenora Thistles, who boasted two good hockey players, Charlie Rayner and Bill Juzda. The next few years were spent in the Army where Gar con- tinued to play hockey, with and against some of the stars-to-be in the National Hockey League. It was during his stretch in the Army that Gar suffered a most unfortunate and serious back injury, practically for- closing his hockey days as a player, We broke a con= fidence pact with Gar regarding the aforementiond in- | more, Toronto; Mrs. Hazel Mec- {brated her seventh birthday on |spending five weeks with Mr. and day evening when Mrs. Fran Wy- IM. Suspend Sentence On Car Theft Two Oshawa youths who admit- ted stealing a car in Whitby were Tuesday placed on suspended sentence for two years. A'lan William Sytnyk, 16, of RR 3, Osh- awa, and Leonard William Couch, 17, of 1233 Simcoe street south, were sentenced by Magistrate F. S. Ebbs in Whitby police court. Fathers of the two boys told the court that while the pair had been in custody awaiting sen- tence, they had purchased anoth- er car for Fred Warren, of Blackstock, whose car had been stolen from its parking spot at the Ontario Hospital. Police told the court one week ago that the car was completely wrecked. The two were ordered to be off the street by 11 p.m. every night while on probation. Mayor Stanley Martin reported that the appeal would then be heard by the Ontario Municipal Board Remand Pair On Store Break-In Two Whitby district men were remanded in custody for one week for sentence by Magistrate F. S. Ebbs in Whitby police court on Tuesday when they pleaded guilty to a charge of breaking into an Ashburn store. David George Foster, of RR 1, Whitby, and John Albert Ytowski, 21, of Whitby, were charged. Ytowski also pleaded guilty to breaking and entering a jewellery store in Pickering village and stealing a camera and three watches. Chief Howard Nickling, of Pickering, said that the pair had been stopped by OPP near the village and the camera and watches recovered. The store window, he said, had been smashed by a heavy object. PC Joseph Tullock, of the Whitby Detachment of the OPP, said that at 3.40 a.m., June 5, he had been called to the general store in Ashburn where the front window had been broke: ond eight cartons of cigarets were missing. The cigarets were found in & garage at Foster's home, said. Bruins whe were very enthusiastic about securing Gar's services when he finished serving Canada in the armed forces. Not only did Gar have praise for men who contribu- ted to his hockey abilities like Bill Hancock, Billy Taylor, the late Tracy Shaw, who coached the Generals while Gar was playing for them, but he was quick to inform us about men who assisted a great deal to the success of the Oshawa Generals; Mr. Matt Leyden, manager, Mr. N. K. Hezzlewood, secretary, Mr. S, E. M-~Tavish, Mr, C. E. McTavish Vice-president, and the late J. B. Highfield, at that time president of General Motors Mr. Highfield was instrumental in sending the entire hockey club to Banff Alberta for a four day vac- ation after they had won their second successive Mem- orial Cup. Also George Campbell, sports editor of this newspaper for his splendid promotional coverage in the paper. While talking about various hockey personalities of today, who played or coached at that time, Gar said, "I wonder how many people realize that Tommy Ivan coached the Brantford Junior "B" 's, when I was play- ing "BR". and now he's general manager of the Chicago Black Hawks."A real gentleman was Tommy." We asked Gar to give his views on being selected as coach of the club, and he replied. "It is a real pleasure and a great challenge for me to coach such a historical club as the Whitby Dunlops. Behind me I have one of the best managers in the business to bring in the best possible material to work with, and the nucleus of the club still here probably this season, are no strangers to me having followed them intensley from the stands since they started operating in Whitby. Personally I know several of the players and that will be a big help to me" General Manager Wren Blair thinks very highly of Gar, and has every bit of confidence in his ability tc coach the Whitby Dunlops. This is the second time that Gar had been approached to coach the club in recent years. TOWN and Country , , . Tonight at the Whitby Com- munity, Arena, the Fergus Thistles oppose the league leading Whitby Red Wings, starting at 8:30 p.m. Whitby are still holding to a stimfi one-point lead over the Brampton Excelsiors.
