For live theatre, opera, or- chestral or concert music, and ballet of quality the country de- pended entirely on sporadic visits of performers from abroad. New Zealand actors, singers, musicians or dancers could not hope to draw sizable audiences in their own country until they had first won recognition abroad. SELF CONSCIOUSNESS The same uncertainty marked musical composition, poetry and other writing. New Zealanders either imitated established mod- els, chiefly British, or self-con- sciously devoted themselves to producing New Zealand "atmos- phere." In either case, they won little support among their coun. trymen. All this has changed dramat-| ically. Within a few years, the| arts have gained confidence &nd in almost every field vigorous and enthusiastic experiments are under way. Overseas traditions still exert a strong influence, But because New Zealand is so remote from other countries, a local atmos- phere is appearing. In several of the arts a distinctive tradition is growing up and creating much interest in fields outside New Zealand.
