Alexandra of Kent Now Becomes Britain's Most Eligible Princess By STEWART MacLEOD Canadian Press Staff Writer LONDON (CP) -- With Prin- cess Margaret married, and pre- sumably less available for court activities, an increasing burden of the royal routine is certain to fall on her cousin, Princess Alex- andra. And it seems safe to predict that "Alex" will be a resounding success. At 23, she has already gained a remarkable degree of popular- ity as the girl-next-door type of princess, and her triumphant tour of Australia last year showed she has nothing to learn about handling lavish state oc- easions. NOT WEALTHY Her friends eall her "Alex" and "Mambo." The last name developed -from use of the word ! '"ma'am"--the correct address her. Unlike other members of royalty, Princess Ale x andra-- who succeeds Princess Margaret as one of the world's most eligi- ble young ladies--is not wealthy. She has had to count her pennies since she was a gin. way to eligible bachelors, but there appears to be no steady beau. Friends say Alex is a great favorite with Prince Charles and Princess Anne and often plays with them in the spacious grounds of Buckingham Palace. She 'indicated her love for chil- dren when she worked for a time as a nursinz assistant in a chil- dren's hospital. She scrubbed floors, bathed patients and played with toddlers. 'She was given no special con- cessions," says the matron. "And if they were offered to her I know hhe would refuse." The British press, not averse to criticizing public figures, has never found any comp'aints with Princess Alexandra. When she buys her clothes off the rack--as she always does--or sometimes |} wears her mother's clothes, they | seem to like her all the more. | CHICKEN CHOW MEIN (Ingredients) chicken breasts stalks of celery, cut up good sized onion : tin bean sprouts tin sliced mushrooms (optional) Ne 0z.
