SATURDAY, MAY 28 favorite. The increase in length and beam is closely related to the fact that more and more people are using 'their boats for family activi- ties such as cruising and. water skiing. Fishermen still make up the largest single 'group of boat users, but 'many anglers are now pur- chasing bigger craft and smooth-trolling larger motors as multi-purpose rigs. Figures prepared by the Allied Boating Association of Canada indicate that the proportion of larger boats purchased is increasing 'every year. A similar survey conducted by the Outboard 'Marine Boating Clinic in- dicated that more companies which formerly did not offer boats above 14 or 15 feet in length have added larger models to their lines in the past couple of years. Ac- cording to Marcel Brier, Outboard Marine's chief engineer, the trend towards larger boats has been accom- panied by a corresponding drop in the number of per- sons who overpower their boats. Most instances of over- 'powering are found on small, 'homemade boats, Brier says. "There are also those few who feel that the more power they can hang on the. transom of a light boat, the greater performance they will get. This is not neces- sarily true. Overpowering a boat certainly results in lower operating efficiency."
