'under 'and ONTARIO TODAY Test Your Family Fitness BY LLOYD PERCIVAL AVE you ever wondered how you and the other members of your family rate in physical fitness? Are you perhaps concerned personally because you get a little too puffed when cutting the lawn? Are you interested in knowing how your children compare with others thorough- out the country? Well, now you can find out Just try the following tests, figure out your score and discover the awful truth. Then, when your family has done them, try them on your friends at your next party. These seven tests deal with the fun- damental factors of fitness and will show you and the other members of the family not only how each rates, but also what are the specific needs for each individual. The results of your tests will also give you a measuring stick to check future progress if you decide to organize a family fitness program -- an idea that has become very popular since medical research has proved the relationship be- tween fitness and work efficiency, morale, energy and a state of positive physical and mental health. 1. PURPOSE: This measures flexibility in the key low back and leg areas. Keep in mind that flexibility is associated with relaxation, endurance and agility. A loss of flexibility means advancing. physical age. Good flexibility helps your children in sport, and to avoid acci- dents. TEST INSTRUCTIONS : Stand with feet to- gether. Bend knees and place hands flat on the ground 12" in front of you. Keeping hands flat on the floor, slowly straighten legs. To pass you must completely straighten legs without lifting palms of hands off the floor: Score 10 : points if you pass. 2. PURPOSE: Abdominal strength is the fit- ness measure here. A strong set of abdominal muscles are important to health, appearance and athletic abi- lity and safety. This is the body area first to lose its fitness -- never neg- lect it. ' TEST INSTRUCTIONS: Lie on the floor on sour back, hands clasped be- hind head, knees bent, feet flat on the floor knees. Then, keeping feet on the floor and hands behind the head, sit up quickly touch knees to chest. Score 7 if you pass. 3. PURPOSE: A key factor in fitness is up- per body strength. Many accidents are caused when there is a weakness here. Strength is still important even if only to help carry the mortgage: A "must" for your athletic children. TEST INSTRUCTIONS : Take up a finished push-up position with weight on your hands and toes, arms and body straight. Then, keeping body straight, bend arms until you are half way ' to the floor. Hold this position for a count of 60. Score 15 if you pass. 4. PURPOSE: Your "muscle sense" is test- ed in this one. This means your abilty to adjust properly to balance problems. A low score means you need general muscle fitness training. TEST INSTRUCTIONS: Stand with feet to- gether, hands on your hips. Close your eyes and lift your right knee to hip height, foot hang- ing directly the knee. Hold for a count of 5 and then slowly reverse leg position -- still with your eyes shut. You pass if you can do this without losing your ba- lance. Score 10 if you pass. 5. PURPOSE: Heart fitness should be given a top priority. This test will give you. a good idea of the present fitness rating of your heart and circulatory system. TEST INSTRUCTIONS: Lie down quietly for five minutes. Have your pulse counted for 30 seconds then multiply this by 2. Then stand up and have pulse taken again in the same way. Compare the differen- ce between your lying and standing pulse rates. To pass there must be less than 10 difference. Score 15 if you pass. 6. PURPOSE: Weakness in the back area is very common these days to lack of exercise. Any weakness should be corrected since added strength means improved stamina, fewer posture prob- lems, less chance for back injury and discomfort. TEST INSTRUCTIONS: Lie on your stomach with hands clasped be- hind head. Have some- one hold your feet down. : Then, keeping hands on head, lift your upper CONTINUED ON PAGE 13 SATURDAY, MAY 28 orl 4 . OF COURSE!
