Alex Gudziak, University of Manitoba ree specialist, grafted eight saplings onto the 95-year- oid elm in May, 1969. But last winter seven of the saplings were ripped away by unidentified in- dividuals, Mr, Gudziak says he cannot es- timate how long the three will survive, A small tree lived for five years under similar condi- tions but the elm in the middle of Wolsely Avenue is considered too old to last that much longer. The last of the eight saplings feeds life to the upper limbs. The branches budded late and the leaves will be small The elm is in Winnipeg's west end. Housewives objected when city councll approved its destruc. tion as a traffic obstacle. Their campaign to save the tree was successful but soon after council agreed to their demands, a series of attacks on the elm began. It was set afire, dyna- mited and mutilated. No city department will take responsibility for the tree now. The parks board says it is not its problem: because it is in the middle of a road. The engineer- ing department, which tried for |vears to have it chopped down, rofuses to have anything to do with the tree. Customers must believe in a product before they will buy it!! READ IN THE DAILY PAPE People believe what they read in their daily newspaper. Media "profile studies" carried out by independent re- search organizations in several cities in the United States and Canada show that the public rates newspapers above all other media in "'believability".
