SATURDAY, APRIL 30 {; Home and borders of flowers inside green frame of lawns. lawn fertilizers are getting better each year. In past years, we often fed the lawn with fertilizers developed originally for vegetables and flowers. These are design- ed to supply elements of flowering and fruiting. They were excellent for gardens but did not supply enough nitrogen for lawns. Nitrogen is the element for green growth. Newer fertilizers which release nitrogen gra- dually are a particular boon, since the grass is thus able to use the nitrogen just about as fast as it is released in- the soil. Watering, if done, should be thorough enough to moisten the soil to a depth of at least four inches. Avoid frequent light sprinklings, which encourage shallow rooting. Soil compaction is one of the serious problems in turf maintenance. Compacted soil should be loosened to permit proper growth of grass roots. Aerifying ma-' chines can be used for large areas, and tubular forks or hand-operated aerifying equipment for small areas. Wise fertilization and management are important in weed control. Many of the available herbicides, used as sprays or dusts, control most weeds. In badly infested areas when cher.iical treatment for weed control has been used, it may be necessary to re-establish the turf by topdressing, tertilizing and re-seeding. Weed infestation is generally the result and not the cause of poor turf. Weeds become a factor when grass loses aggressiveness and vigor. Thin, open turf, the result of starvation or damage, encourages weed infestation. A fertilizy program designed to supply nutrients in accordance with grass requirements will generally stimulate desirable grasses at the expense of weeds. This year there will be white grubs, the larvae of the June bug, to contend with. Excellent commercial products are now available to combat this menace. Reputable companies are producing effective pest-killers as well as weed-killer. Additional information regarding turf and lawn management can be found in the Ontario Department of Agriculture Bulletin No. 448, "Lawns", and in the Canadian Department of Agriculture publication, "The Construction and Care of Lawns". These publications explain in detail how to establish and care for lawns and how to control diseases and insects. Pamphlets are also available from several commercial manufacturers.
