10 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Fridoy, April 29, 1960 -- Cultivating between rows of flowers or vegetables, which can be one of the most difficult garden chores, is effortless with this newest model garden liller Rushy Plants F><v Rooting Slips from your vines or bushy- type plants will root easily. Roots form in soil, but vermiculite or sand is better. Cut 5 inches from your old plant, slightly below a leaf. Cut off lower leaves. Cover 2 inches of stem. Cover with a glass drinking glass to hasten rooting. If you want to root a number of cuttings, use a large flower- pot. Plug up the drainage hole in a 3inch pot, and place it in the centre. Fill the area between the two pots with wet sand. Mois- ture will come through centre pot filled with water. Plant small groups of bulbs ia an oval pattern for best ef- fect. Prepare soil by spading it up, breaking clumps, then rak- ing it smooth. In the fall remember to gather fallen leaves from the lawn and add them to your compost pile. Or if you prefer, spade them into old annual beds for a rich humus supply. One of the nation's biggest family recreations is -- boating. A large proportion of the coun- try's recreational fleet are trans- ported on trailers. Easily pulled behind the family car, these boat trailers help broaden the range of waters that the 'skipper and crew' can enjoy. The trailers also provide a convenient and in- expensive way to store the boa: at home when it is not in use. An important accessory for the trailered boat between trips, is a shelter for protection from the elements. The makers of some outboard motors suggest a simple building project for a boat shelter -- czas- ily within the abilities of most do- it-yourselfers. It will help to keap the craft looking newer, the motor running better. I yours is a one-car family with a two-car garage or ecar- port, your problem is simple . . . The unused car space is just right for any trailered boat up tc about 22 feet in length. Besides giving the boat complete protec- tion, it also provides storage space for needed boating gear and offers a good place to work on the boat. When garage space is avail- able Scott experts suggest con- struction of a simple "boatport" or shelter. Consisting of roof and suitable supports, the boat shelter can be made free-standing, supported all around by 2x4's or 4x4's. It may of may not have side walls or wood or canvas. Or, build it as a lean-to, adjacent to a wall of a house or a garage. The size of the "port" should encompass the full length of the boat and trailer; a width of nine feet should be ample for most boats. The roof should have e sugugh pitch to assure good run-off snow and heavy rains. vii Mh gated aluminum, steel, fiberglas sheets or corrugated panels are ali good shelter materials. Place For Boat In Home Areas covered by roofing paper or com- position shingles. A favored type of lean4o con- struction features a roof that is hinged to the wall, and outside supports are either hinged or re- movable. The whole structure can swing down flat against the wall when not in use, Scott experts point out that al- though modern metal and fiber- glas craft stand up well with can- vas or tarpaulin coverings, a more substantial shelter gives added protection assuring a "like-new boat" for a much long- er time. Ceramic Block Offers Color A new ceramic-face glass block offers the homeowner a potential' for using more color and design in his home improvement proj- ects. Its weatherproof ceramic ish makes the block suitable for outdoor as well as indoor use. Room dividers, indoors or wind- break screens, outdoors -- may be made as colorful as they are functional, Blue, coral, yellow and green are the colors of the ceramie- face block. This permits a vast variety of imaginative patterns and combinations by mixing and mating with the glass block. Horizontal, vertical, checker- board and random patterns can be achieved easily. As the blocks are joined by mortar, they can be used out- doors fo form a weatherproof wall which has an insulation equal to that of am eight-inch masonry wall, : Architects and designers find the use of glass block ideal for bringing more daylight into the home. Together with the new ceramic-face block they can now add the plus factor of more color | K may also be made of wood '!and design. There is one very common, easily-made error in bulb plant- ing that can make all the differ- at all. That is, planting the bulb upside down. Usually the top is the pointed surface, but if is doubt, ask your garden supply ence in the quality of the plant : dealer. or whether it comes up R. B.
