The Oshawa General Hospital is owned by the people of Oshawa and the surrounding eommunities. Who runs the Oshawa General Hospital ? The Oshawa General Hospital is governed by a Board of Directors who are elected annually at a public meeting. The Board governs the hospital in accordance with the reg- ulations of the Public Hospitals' Act and th: Ontario Services Commis- sion Act. Why is a Fund-Raising Campaign necessary ? We must have more hospital beds for Oshawa and district people 1 How is the money being raised ? We must raise $850,000 by public subscription. The balance of $1,850,000 will be obtained thraugh Federal and Provincial government grants, plus grants from the City of Oshawa and other municipalities. é Does the Oshawa General Hospital make a profit ? The hospital does not attempt to make a profit, but strives to provide the best service with the money at its disposal, Hospitals are not per- mitted, under the new Hospital Insurance scheme, to make a profit. Why isn't a second hospital being built ? It would cost too much. Each bed in the new wing will cost about $12,000. Each bed in a new hospital would cost twice as much or more because existing services and facil- ities would have to be duplicated. Our present hospital has reached a size where 'it has a big enough vol- ume of work to justify maintaining the finest equipment and the most skilled technical and medical people. Any new hospital that we could construct for a realistic sum of money would be much too small to be able to provide such advanced and highly-specialized service. a What caused the overcrowding ? The fact that Oshawa General has become such a fine, well-equipped hospital has been one of the causes of our current dilemma, More and more specialists are booking their patients into our hospital instead of sending them to Toronto for surg- ery or treatment. In addition, out- lying hospitals now send many of their patients to us for specialized treatment. Too, the population of the area has increased considerably. And the advent of the Ontario Hos- pital scheme -- which has made medical facilities much more easily accessible, financially, to the aver- age person -- has also sparked an upsurge of patients requiring beds. Are any special departments being provided in the new addition ? Yes, but these will be quite modest because our major current need is more beds, We are providing a new Is the Oshawa General Hospital fully accredited ? Yes. The Oshawa General Hospital is the only hospital in the area that is fully accredited by the Canadian Council on Hospital Accreditation. How many people work at the Oshawa General Hospital ? The Hospital staff includes 575 full- time employees and 100 part-time people. Over 80 students are regist- ered in our School of Nursing. How much money is spent in Oshawa by the Oshawa General Hospital ? Every year, the Hospital spends over $2,000,000 for salaries, wages and supplies. L] What is the Hospital's purchasing policy ? We shop to obtain top quality merchandise for the lowest possible price. We do most of our shopping locally, How many standard ward beds does the Hospital have ? Approximately one half of our 343 beds are standard ward, This ratio will remain the same when the new wing is built, as this is a requirement of the Ontario Hospital Services Commission Act. The balance of our beds are categorized os private and semi-private. Are any items not covered by the Ontario Hospitalization scheme ? Yes. Among them are crutches, tele- phone charges, patent medicines and surgical appliances. Do we have enough land to build our proposed wing ? Yes. None of the money we propose to raise will have to be spent for land, What about parking ? We are working on this problem which is almost insurmountable but it appears that present parking fa- cilities will have to suffice, for a while, at least. What are the results of questionnaires presently being mailed to patients ? We estimate that over 979% of the replies received have been compli- mentary to the hospital's service. Any criticisms or suggestions are thoroughly investigated and, if warranted, action is promptly taken by our staff, | J How will the money be collected ? Most pecple will have the opportun- ity of contributing in cash or through a payroll-deduction plan at their place of employment. Other citizens, organizations and indust- ries will be called on personally or solicited by letter. Must all subscriptions be paid in full at once ? No. A deferred plan has been de- YHE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesdoy, April 27, 1960 17 | are the Hospital's directors paid ? No. They contribute their services voluntarily and spend considerable time working on hospital affairs. When is construction to start ? Work is expected to begin in the fall of 1960. It is scheduled for comple- tion in the fall of 1961. é Will there be any campaign expenses ? Yes. However, none of the campaign workers will be paid. All canvassers and committee members are serving on a voluntary basis. Administrative and publicity expenses will be charged to us at cost. é Why should you give ? Because records show that one pers son in every six will be hospitalized during the coming year. Everybody should be vitally interested in pro- tecting the health of his family, his neighbors and himself. When all of us give, we help not only ourselves but each other as well. é How serious is the overcrowding ? The hospital, as of March 25, had waiting for admission 94 patients on the urgent list; 580 patients booked to July 18 for elective sur- gery; and 407 patients booked to June 30 for tonsil operations. This delay is not caused through lack of operating room capacity or equip= ment but through a shortage of beds, ® Will there be sufficient nurses to staff the new wing ? The hospital has been fortunate, during the present serious shortage of nurses, to have the staff to take care of its needs. We have used every opportunity to secure nurses and, with the expanded facilities of our School of Nursing, we anticipate adequate staff will be available $5.60 I urns, | most fernaces.
