Seek Loom ] For Museum By ELSA STORRY BROUGHAM -- Since a grant of $2500 has been received from Ontario County towards the es-| tablishment of a museum for Pickering township, the collection of funds by public subscription has been given fresh impetus re- port the canvassers Attention now is focussed on the collection of historical articles to be housed in the museum buildings. | At an executive meeting of| Pickering Township Historical So-| ciety held at the home of the] president, W. G. Lawson, plans to make the most of the arrange-| ment of buildings, and assemble] displays that are both informa- | tive and interesting, were discuss- ed. It was agreed that various Pick-| ering Township residents, profi-| cient in their fields, such as car- penters, construction workers, | display artists, catalogue experts, and those versed in historical data, should be called upon for advice and assistance | Committees of volunteer work-| ers will be formed, and through their efforts and the increasing fi pancial assistance now in evi- dence, the museum should be a reality and have its opening this year LOOM WANTED A list of furnishings for the 10g house in process Of restoration and now on the museum site at Brougham, is being prepared Robert Miller reports that he has a good collection assembled, but that there are many other ar- ticles required to help tell the story of Pickering tow nship from its earliest days Articles which are donated or loaned to the museum will be listed and labelled, and a form of receipt is now being prepared. | One of the relics which is not in the collection is a loom. Mr, Miller, who can be reached at WH 2-4637, will be pleased to have any information where one can be obtained. He has several accessories for the loom, such as gkein winders and counters, but the loom itself is still lacking Dalai Lama May Build Big Temple By RUKMINI DEVI Canadian Press Correspondent BOMBAY (CP) -- The exiled Dalai Lama is reported to be toy- ing with the idea of building the world's biggest Buddhist temple in the Himalayan hills in north- west India The temple, which would be part of a monastery with accom-| modation for hundreds of monks, may be modelled on the Potala Palace, the Tibetan home of the Dalai Lama from which he es | eaped last March. "90 finance the plan the god- ¥ing is said to be converting his treasures into cash. The Calcutta market is buzzing with fantastic rumors of the disposal of the Dalai Lama's "jewel hoards," es- timated at millions of dollars The treasures are said to in- clude gold blocks, gem-studded ornaments and gold coins. They were sent on mule-back to Gang- tok, capital of the Himalayan border kingdom of Sikkim, in 1951 when the Red Chinese first in- vaded Tibet, The "hoard" was re- ported deposited with the Sikkim royal family, related to the Dalai Lama The newspaper Indian Express says 1,000 mule loads of treasures were carried to Gangtok over the snow-bound Nathula Pass. The paper said that the government of India was first requested by the Dalai Lama to keep the treasures in safe custody but that New Delhi declined because of possible trouble with Peking A number of Calcutta banks also are reported to have refused for political reasons to help the Dalai Lama to dispose of the treasure. After some difficulty, the Dalai Lama is said to have persuaded one Indian bank to undertake the work. The Dalai Lama is reported to) have assured the Indian govern-| ment he would not make "polit ical use" of the money received from the sales He is believed to have told some Indian and Tibetan friends he wants large funds for building a Buddhist temple on the Potala model. There is speculation that he may choose Dalhousie, a Him- alayan health resort in northwest India. for the purpose Survey of Canadian Theatres WINNIPEG (CP) -- Bruce Swerdfager is breaking trail for| what he hopes will be a steady procession of touring theatre groups across Canada Mr, Swerdfager, company man- ager for the Stratford Shake- spearean Festival Foundation of Canada, is collecting information about theatre facilities across the country. The survey, sponsored by the Canada Council, is being made for the Canadian Theatre Centre. "When this is finished, we will have complete details on theatres and auditoriums all across Can- ada," he said during a visit here. "Then if a foreign touring group wants to visit Canada, or Canadian groups plan to travel we will be in a position to rec- ommend places." Mr. Swerdfager, himself an actor, is to visit all Canadian centres with a population of 5,000 | or more. He will survey theatres, ¢oncert halls and auditoriums, listing such faciliti g capacity, lightir sizes and stage floors. Special ! PARAMOUNT e FANCY RED | 0p Special ! KRAFT 20M 6 P Special !
