Big Improvment Shown By Paints HOUSE paint that dries in less than an hour--floor enamels that can be walked on in 30 minutes-- wall paints that can be strubbed again and again -- paints that give a multicolored pattern in a single application -- house paints that clean themselves %-- mildew- proof paints fume-resistant paints -- these are just a few of the products of paint technology that make home upkeep and beautification easier for you to- day. And today's paints are easier to apply, last longer, hide bet- ter, come in more colors and keep the brilliance of those col- ors longer than would have been dreamed of as recently as the end of the war. NO ODOR, FAST DRYING Greatest boon to the do-it-your- selfer are the water - thinned paints, known variously as la- texes, plastic, rubberized or vinyl paints. They, have no painty odor, dry in less than an hour, show no lap marks and can be touched up without showing. Tools, as well as splatters and drips, can be cleaned with plain water. In- troduced originally only as flat wall paint, the latexes are now formulated as floor enamel and as exterior house paint. Since they are immune to' alkali, they are ideal for new plaster and any surface containipg cement or mortar. Alkyd resin paints are the delight of both the professional and the amateur painter for a number of reasons: they dry fast, are extremely durable, have good color and color retention, withstand repeated scrubbing and hide well. Most of them are odorless. In general, these solvent-thin- ned alkyd resin paints and ena- mels are superior to the latexes in their hiding power, scrubabil- ity, resistance to abrasion and spotting. Even that old standby, oil- based house paint has changed. Raw linseed oil is not always used as the only vehicle for ex- terior oil paints. The oil is often "cooked" heat treated to change its molecular structure-- or it is combined with alkyd resins to form what is known as an oil-modified alkyd. Both of these are used for house paints, with the oil-modified type being preferred for deeper colors and the oil for white and light tints. Many house paints are self- cleaning in that they wear away by chalking which is washed away by the rain along with the dirt that adheres to the chalk. Not only are modern house paints self-cleaning, but there are special formulations which contain additives that prevent the growth of mildew. Other paints can be made to resist the blackening action of industrial and other fumes which ruin the color of ordinary paints in those areas where such fumes are prevalent. BLISTERING COMBATTED Of recent development are the blister-proof paints which permit the water vapor generated within the house to pass through the paint film without blistering it. At the same time, they prevent liquid moisture in the form of rain or sleet from passing through. : No longer is "polka dot' paint a joke. Enjoying increasing pop- ularity are the multi-color paints which make it possible to. apply two or more colors simultaneous- ly in a random, spatter effect. PAINTING OVERHEAD Don't try to paint a ceiling with a single ladder. The job is much simpler and will be done quicker if you suspend strong planks be- tween two ladders at a height which places your head within a few inches of the ceiling. Start in a corher and work across the narrow dimension of the room, applying paint in a strip two to three feet wide. Because you are working across the narrow di- mension, you will be able to lap the edge of the new paint before it dries. rpum paint is designed for use on GUARANTEED SERVICE FOR ONE YEAR A. C. The proper procedure is to paint radiators with a flat paint, usually the same paint you use for the walls. Besides permitting maximum radiation, the use of the same color makes the bulky radiator fade into the background and become less noticeable. Always turn the radiators off before painting. You can't do a good job if the surface is hot.
