PAGE TEN ONTARIO TODAY SATURDAY, 5 Brevine sudden storms, cracking ice and frozen fingers, thousands of Ontario anglers are now taking a winter harvest from the province's lakes. Skaters flash around the fishermen at such places as Frenchman's Bay, close to heavily populated centres; only a few dedicated anglers break the whiteness of the rugged Superior shores. Mecca of the ice-fishermen, however, is Lake Simcoe, 280 square miles in area, fourth largest of Ontario's inland lakes, and prolific enough to keep biologists constantly amazed. From east of Oshawa, west of Galt and Guelph, and south of the U.S. border, the fishermen travel to Lake Simcoe once the ice is strong enough to hold a hut. An aerial survey by the Ontario Depart- ment of Lands and Forests one weekend last winter revealed more than 3,540 fishing huts on the ice. The winter fishermen get a varied catch, from perch and whitefish to pike Weekend anglers arrive at Lake Simcoe. No huts, just a canvas windbreak, on Batchawana Bait, bobber and stove are standard equipment
