10 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, January 20, 1960 Harness Racing Spor Westmount Kiwanis Tops Bantam Loop /Macko's A's | SPORTS t Too Good | CALENDAR T Popular In Nova Scotia By ED SMITH Canadian Press Staff Writer DARTMOUTH, N.S. (CP)--Age is no barrier to entry in the ancient and honorable pastime of harness racing on ice in Nova Scotia. The "old pros" -- horses and drivers alike -- are looking forward to the International In- vitation meet scheduled here Jan. 26-27. Barred from summer tracks at | the age of 15, trotters and pacers ; often wind up racing in winter in many Maritime localities as soon as pond and lake ice is thick enough. The international meet here has had them as old ok 22 and as young as three years old. Fred Lahey of the Eastern Driving Association, which spon sors the meet, says older horses dominate the entry list. "Owners of colts don't like to take a chance in breaking a summer training routine." Mild winters cancelled out the ice racers twice in the last three years. In 1959 there were 61 horses entered for the 26 - dash event, Dave Pinkney of Truro, N.S., drove Scottish Wick to vie- tory in the $1,000 free-for-all trot, covering the quarter mile straightaway in 29 seconds. The $1,800 championship pace was taken by Bud Henley with Merle Turner of Dartmouth in the sulky. HEAVY BETTING Pari . mutuel betting windows are set up at the edge of the lake course and do as big a business as any summertime meet. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR 'Everything From Soup To Nuts' WHITBY DUNLOPS took care of the Moscow Selects last night at Maple Leaf Gardens to the tune of 9-1. The "Dunnies" had a few additions to their line= up for this one with "Butch" Martin of the K-W Dutch- men scoring three goals. He was on a line with team- mate Don Rope and Bob Rousseau, the sensational Brockville Junior who is headed for the Habs. Defense- men Ralph Hosking of the Dutchmen and Moe Benoit of Belleville were also in the line-up. Each of the other four mentioned got into the scoring, via the assist column, Hosking three times and Rousseau twice. As a team, the "Dunnies" showed much more polish right from the start and Moscow Selects, while putting up a good show in brief flashes, were definitely outclassed. "Dunnies" suffered an injury loss last night when play- ing coach Ted O'Connor was injured, It is feared that a torn shoulder muscle may keep the defenseman out of action for a game or two. It's to be hoped Ted's stay "on the shelf" is short, because the Dunnies are already lab- oring with a weakend rearguard, since Alfie Treen will not be available for at least another couple of weeks. Oshawa Ski Club, now blessed with almost more snow than they need, is ready to launch into a series of season's special events, starting this week-end. On Sat- urday-Sunday, the Oshawa Club will host the Southern Ontario four-way Junior championships, with cross= country race Saturday morning and downhill in the afternoon, slalom racing on Sunday morning and the jumping in the afternoon. It is fully expected that this feature event will attract a large list of entries and a big crowd of interested spectators, to the club property, Brimacomb's Hill, two miles east of Kirby, off Highway No. 35. In addition to a splendid club house, ski shop and three rope tows, the latest improvement to their property, which in itself is one of the finest ski terrains in Ontario, is a new road, right to the foot of the main hill, adjacent to the clubhouse. It is planned to have a large parking area cleared here, so that spectators can sit in their cars, if they wish, and have an excellent view of the jumping etc. BRIGHT BITS:-- Ike Hildebrand, the former Osh- awa Generals ace, who in recent years has been playing- eoach of the Belleville McFarlands has been relieved of his coaching duties and Belleville's former goaltender Gordie Bell has taken over as coach. Ike, a former NHL and AHL performer, is expected to stay with McFar- lands as a player. Aside from the fact Belleville hasn't enjoyed much success this season, we suspect that part of the reason for the change could be that Gofdie Bell, who suffered a serious eye injury in Whitby, early this season, has a contract for the season and since he is un- able to play, his only active capacity with the club would be as coach, while Hildebrand will stay on as a player . .. Jimmy Topping, Oshawa "City League" pro=- duct, who played goal with the Oshawa Juvenile Alle Ontario champions two seasons ago, was injured six weeks ago. Since then, his team, the Brooklin - Port Perry Combines Junior "C" club, has folded so Jimmie has returned to Oshawa and last night returned to the nets also, helping Beaton's Dairy win a local Juvenile fixture over Tony's . . .Brian Morris, scoring star of the Westmount Kiwanis, the team that this week clinched first place in the Oshawa Minor Bantam League, came up from the "Blues and Greys" of last season and now in his first season as a full-fleged Bantam, he has 19 goals and four assists, for 23 points, just one point behind Johnnie Fair of Civitans, who leads the league as top-scorer with his 24 total . . . Eddie Litzenberger is reported to be making satisfactory progress, but up until yesterday, was still under heavy sedation Jean Beliveau, only three points behind Bronco Horvath and Bobby Hull, who are tied for first place in the NHL scoring race with 55 points apiece, is being touted as the player most likely to overhaul this pair and bring the scoring erown to Canadiens, Macko's: (Baker, Macko's Garrard Romanuk) Myle JUVENILE HOCKEY |» 2 10. 3: | (Welsh, Dodsworth) ....
