4 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesday, January 12, 1960 District Governor Is Lions Speaker BOWMANVILLE (Stafl) Lions District 'AS governor, "Doc" Jamieson, of Coboconk, Monday night, while paying his official visit to the Lions club, urged the members to make a New Year's resolution. The resolution the governor urged all Lions to make was to "begin to live today while there is yet time." He continued: "Perhaps there is nothing the average Lion can do about world affairs other than to support the government of the free peoples of the world. We live in an age of challenge to cherish ideals and of cynical disbelief. But we also live in an 1ge of faith and can best save a desperate world by refusing to be desperate. As 1960 is here now, it is a imely question to ask ourselves what are we going to do with it. And as we answer that question as individuals, we must remem- ber that we answer it also for association, which is made of almost 600,000 drops of man energy and intelligence, efore I urge you as members C ions International to resolve y live today while there is yet time," the governor told the club. 'He pojnted out as 1960 was born just a few days ago, so was Lions International born some 43 years ago, from a thread binding I ns together it became a a our and now is a cable, bind-| ng nations together and making leaders of the community of its members 40 AREA CLUBS According to Dr, there are 40 clubs in District A3|at the Whitby ind the Bowmanville one is 29th| n the list. The Crawford rink Oshawa club's represenia "One problem that has been very disappointing to your Inter- national Council is the achieve- ment and retention of member- ship. We are losing great num- bers of them, especially in their first year or two of service. This is not only true of Lions, but of all service clubs, they are losing four of every five new members they take into the club. There are more ex-Lions walking the streets than there are Lions. To combat this, we suggest that new members be selected very carefully, they be investigated very thoroughly and screened very carefully before they are ap- proached to become members of the club. After a candidate for member- ship has been selected, have a heart to heart talk with him and let him know what is expected of him and what is going to cost him to be a member of the Lions. Indoctrination is very impor- tant for the new member, He should meet with the informa- tion and education committee be- fore, or soon after his accep- tance into Lionism as Lions edu- cation is very important to both Promotions Make Plans Woman Aids THEATRE GUIDE 5.55, 8.45 p.m. Last complete show at 8.45 p.m, Regent -- "The Beloved Infidel", At Columbus By MRS.
