Atomic Power Expected 1967 By JOHN E. BIRD Canadian Press Staff Writer OTTAWA (CP) -- By the time Canada celebrates its centennial in 1967 construction may be well under way on this country's first large-scale atomic power station eapable of generating -electricity econimically. > At the end of the next decade or early in the 1970s similar sta- tions generating up to 200,000 kilo- watts of electricity or 268,000 horsepower may be springing up in power - hungry Ontario, Mani- toba and the Maritimes. This forecast of economic atomic power is predicted on the success of the current Canadian gram for construction of nu- 3 clear power plants. The Canadian approach in volves the use of natural uran- fum as a fuel and heavy water to control the plant and to trans- fer heat to raise steam to drive turbines.' BEST PROSPECTS Atomic Energv of Canada Lim 'N Y ' ited, crown company in charge ol the federal nuclear program, is ew ear S convinced this approach holds the best promise of producing eco- pomic electric power from the RESERVATIONS ADVISED PLANT SITE Other projects planned for next ear include further studies on atom. The program has been under gharp criticism from outside ex-| perts but federal atomic officials | remain unshaken in their faith in| the natural uranium-heavy water | concept. They are convinced that | if the atomic energy program is reviewed by a special committee] at the 1960 session of Parliament | there will be no change in policy. Winnett Boyd, a Montreal en-| gineer, says Canada is making a multi-million-dollar error in the design of nuclear power stations. He advocates a design of his own employing the use of helium gas and graphite in place of heavy water and an enriched and ex- pensive uranium fuel. | However, atomic officials say| mo experts now can forecast| which system will turn out to be| the best. Thev believe the Cana- | dian approach has a ' greater] chance of success than others, es-| pecially as it involves big plants KINLOCH'S MEN'S WEAR KING ST. Construction will be mostly com- pleted next year, allowing a start-up by mid-1961. Information gained from the op- eration of the plant will go into the final design of the first full- scale atomic station, to be built near Kincardine on Lake Huron by late 1964 or early 1965. Some federal atomic experts feel this $60,000,000 plant may produce economic power if de- velopment costs of some $20,000, 000 are not taken into account. They are convinced that the next plant after this one will produce electricity as economically as thermal stations powered with | coal or some other fossil fuel. This is the plant that likely will be well under construction by 1967. IMPORTANT TO URANIUM Advent of economic atomic OSHAWA (lel ad ad], [ CENTRE 1970s will be of major importance to Canada's uranium industry. The United States, the indus- try's main customer, has decided not to buy more Canadian uran- jum than amounts confained in contracts expiring in 1962 and 1963, but has agreed to a stretch- out to 1966 on deliveries. After 1966 it's hoped that a demand for uranium for power plants will in- ject new life into the industry, In an effort to increase Can- ada's knowledge of peacful uss of aomic energy, preliminary work will start next year on the design of a new research and de- velopment centre in Manitoba. Construction will start in about /two vears on a site north of Win-| 'nipeg, likely on the Winnipeg! River.
