After two years of independ- ence from British rule, this y al ber of the C wealth is making a bold attempt to find out whether Western style parliamentary democracy can work in Southeast Asia. The road ahead for the new Al- Mance party government, led by Prime Minister Tengku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-haj, may not be easy. For beneath a surface of prosperity, Malaya faces prob- lems which if unresolved could jeopardize its survival. 11 STATES Although only the size of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, Ma- laya has 11 state governments with nine Moslem sultans, and an elected king. Its multi - racial population of Malays, Chinese, | Indians, Eurasians and Euro- peans live in harmony but true! sational unity has not yet been attained. Noting the ad- miration also of many young Chi- nese for Communist China, he said: "We have got to try to win them over to our side. We must Pegin somewhere. We must try and educate them in our schools to have some pride in this coun try." He ruled out the possibility of merger between the federation and Singapore, which gained in- ternal self - government in June. Addition of more than 1,000,000 Chinese would make Singapore 0 the Chinese the majority race in the federation.
