En ini lm, wy og Tey, - Mrs. D. K. Stiles, Oshawa co- ordinator for the Hallowe'en col- lection for UNICEF (the United Nations International Children's Emergency ~ Fund) announces that the amount collected this year is more than double the, $1087.84 which was sent in lasl year and eleven hundred more children had the satisfaction of doing something for less fortun- ate children in other countries. "I would like to extend the warmest thanks and appreciation to the people of Oshawa and dis- trict from the United Nations As- sociation in Canada, committee for UNICEF," Mrs. Stiles said. Dyrland of Coronation, Gertrude Colpus, King Street, North Simcoe, Queen Elizabeth, South Simcoe, the classes of Miss B. Hillier. and Mrs. M. Martin at Westmount, and Woodcrest. The total collec- tion from these schools was $1884.56. Participating schools (and their collections) outside Oshawa were: Brooklin $125.79; Hampton $68.49; Dr. Robert Thornton $64.90; Mitchell's Cor- ners $12.50 and, Colborne in Whitby $405.72. Explorers from Whitby United Church added $20.82 and several children from schools which did not make ar- ts to collect for UNI- generosity of the householders and the joyful co-operation of over 2608 small 'spocks and gob- lins' the amount of $2602.81 has been collected in this area. "This is the real success of 'Hallowe'en for UNICEF', pro- viding a good reason for Hallow- e'en by transforming a formerly pointless festival into a wonder- fully satisfying and useful occa- sion. In our modern society, with agencies doing such a good job of caring for the needy in our communities, there aré few op- portunities for our children to do something for someone else on a personal level and to feel the special joy of giving. "Last year, nine Oshawa Schools and two outside the city joined in the 'Shell Out' cam- paign along with Brownies, Cubs and a number of individual chil- dren, It is interesting to note that each of thése are on I CEF called for cans on their own and turned in $20.03. "In arranging 'to have UNICEF material and cans on hand right here in Oshawa, Mrs. Claude H. Vipond and I hoped to save much time, many letters to the UN Committee for UNICEF in Toronto and the expense of freight charges for supplies. Any- one in this area who wished to participate in 'Hallowe'en for UNICEF', be they individual, group or school, could do so by just picking up the phone. "The enthusiasm of the re- sponse has been well worth the work involved and, once again, we wish to say 'thank you', esp- Stanley S.
