14 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Saturday, September 26, 1959 SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR 'Everything From Soup To Nuts' Simcoe Hall for the 1959 Oshawa Minor Softball Association's Ki- TODAY'S Sports Calendar is the longest of the sea- son, as far as Oshawa and district sports activity, most of it being the playoff variety also, is concerned, but it just so happens, as we pointed out yesterday, that most of the action is away-from-home. The Oshawa "Imps" are playing North York Knights and that game, instead of being this afternoon, is called for 10.00 o'clock this morning. The Legion Junior baseball team is in Cornwall, the UAW Del's are in Florence an no fewer than five Oshawa teams are engaged in OASA playoff action -- all away from home, Mount Zion is also away, they open the All-Ontario Inter, "D" finals, tonight, up in Selkirk. The one big "home game" that looms as an at- traction for local sports fans who are seeking entertain- ment tonight, is the second game of the Inter. "C" OASA Southern final series, out at Brooklin, at 8.15 o'clock. Brooklin and Dresden battled for 23 innings last Saturday and the Stevenson Motors team finally won out 2-1. If they can win again tonight, they'll move into the All-Ontario finals in the Inter.."C" series -- with the finals being against Capreol, up there over the Thanksgiving holiday week-end. Oshawa Minor Softball Assoc. teams enter their 1959 championship finals on Monday night, in both the Midget and Kiwanis Bantam Leagues, In the Midget series. it's Fernhill Park boys opening their 3-out-of-5 series at Sunnyside Park on Monday evenin at 5.30 p.m. sharp and in the Bantam Leaue, Simcoe Hall and Woodview Park elash in their opener, at the same time on Monday, at Woodview Park. Woodview Park nosed out Eastview Park Bantams in the 3rd game of their semi-final series, last night, 4-3. A bunt that worked like a "home run" on a bad throw to 1st base by the catcher, tied up the game for Woodview and they won it when the next batter bunted safely, took second on a passed ball and then scored from second base, on a sac rifice fly to the outfield. In the other Bantam League third and deciding game last night, Simcoe Hall broke in front early and then held on to beat out Southmead lads 11-6. Both Southmead and Eastview teams gave good accounts of themselves before bowing out and though eliminated, they can look back on this 1959 sea- son with some pride and considerable satisfaction. Alex Oakley, Oshawa's "walking star" won the 3rd annual 20-mile walk, sponsored by Gladstone A.C. of Toronto, on Sunday, in 2 hrs; 54 mins, 24 secs, a full six minutes better than last year's time and a new course record. Oakley walked the first ten miles in an hour and 28-minutes and then amazed the judges by doing the last half two minutes faster, to finish over a mile ahead of Vladmir Grandy. Jim Jewson, 10568 winner, came in third. In the field of 20, Ted Farrow of Oshawa Sham- rock A.C, finished a good sixth. Kevin McManus, of Bowmanville, who set the pace for the first nine miles, had to retire at the 17-mile point, due to swollen and blistered feet, The Oshawa "walkers" will be in action again next, at Guelph. BRIGHT BITS: -- It's interesting to note that when the Lakeshore hockey men from Cobourg, Port Hope, Bowmanville, Brooklin, ete., met the other night in Port Hope, there was little interest shown in forming an Ine termediate league but almost every centre was keen to have a Junior OHA league in the "C" category. Oshawa Juveniles, of the local "City League," may also compete in this new Junior OHA "C" league, as an exhibition entry, if plans go through . . . GIL HODGES hit his 25th homer of the season, in the 11th inning yesterday in Chieago, to give Los Angeles Dodgers 4 5-4 win over Chicago Cubs--and perhaps a berth in the World Se- ries. The win put Dodgers one full game up, as the Phil lies continued their "ear not" attitude against Lew Bure dette and whipped Braves yesterday right in Milwaukee +.» BIG FOUR football action this week sees Argos try- Ing out their new quarterback, Al Dorow, against the | | | | | | | | | | | 'wanis Bantam League champ- jonship, with the first game of the 3-out-of-5 title series, called for Woodview Park diamond, on Monday evening, at 5.30 o'clock sharp. After that, Leaming~ singled and Pilkey walked but Webster fanned Jarvis and Larmer, to hold his team's slim lead, Woodview Park boys won the game in the sixth, aided by a combination of alert base-run- ning and slack defensive fielding on the part of the Eastview team. Cooper opened the inning with a bunt and when the catch- er threw wildly to 1st base, the ball going fo the outfield, Cooper ran all the way to tie the score. Goring, on the mound for Southmead, their ace in pitching them into the semi-finals, came up with just one-to-many ap- threerun rally, Seton "homered" in the sixth, but forgot to touch 2nd base and was called out there, on an appeal play. Southmead ran into Nosal on a "hot night". The Simcoe Hall pitcher was in top form and he also got fine support from his mates, He walked a couple of batters in the first inning, Si- block and McKnight and he had a little bit of trouble in the fourth inning also but actually, the fifth frame was his only faltering spot. Pelow and Kaplon both singled to start the fifth inning, then Siblock came through with a single to keep the rally rolling. Goring walked. With one out, Peters was stafe on a choice play that missed and in all, four runs scored. I de Bh Ta Hockey On Sunday IsO.K.
