THE OSHAWA TIMES, We dnasday, August 12, 1959 AJAX APPOINTS CHIEF The Ajax town council Tues- day appointed Deputy - Chief Constable George Dunn (left) as chief constable to fill the vacancy created by the recent death of Chiof Howard Traves. Chief Dunn has a long record of police work. He joined Lon- don Metropolitan police force in 1939. In 1942 he enlisted in the Royal Navy, where he held the rank of Lieutenant, Navy Commandos. In 1945 he return- ed to the Metropolitan police force, and served with Scotland yard from 1947 to 1952. He came to Canada in 1952 and joined the Ajax police force here in 1954. He was promoted to sergeant in 1955 and deputy- 4 [tion of the new wing of Golden |Plow Lodge, the new name for chief in 1957. Active in com- munity projects, he has taken an active pari in promoting highway traffic safety, is pres- ident of the Red Cross branch here, secretary of the 2nd Ajax scout group committee and president of the Ajax Rugger Club. He has lived in Ajax since 1946 and was educated at Ajax pub- lic schools and Pickering High School. He served three years in the RCAF police. He is mar- ried and has two children. --Photos by John Mills COUNCIL BRIEFS Offer Third Liquor Plea AJAX (Staff) Ajax council has received a third peti- tion asking for a liquor plebiscite low, which have been in use since/check up and after his release to be taken in the town. The town clerk has been asked | by the council to check the peti-| tion against the municipal voters' list. Two previous peti- tions have been rejected by the council for various reasons, chief-| ly for illegal signatures. Promotor of the petition is Wil- liam J. McDonald, a partner in the Hotel Ajax company. ENDORSE RESOLUTION The council endorsed a resolu- tion from the city of Barrie| hich asks that legislation be en-| pare to provide a second set of| brakes on buses and trucks over | four tons. The city of Barrie in its communication states that a runaway bus in that city re- cently endangered the lives of a| number of school children. BAD INTERSECTION A letter was received from Guy Colm, a resident of Lake Vista Gardens drawing atten-| tion to the fact that a neighbor-| hood store had opened on the| Pickering Beach road outside = Ajax boundary. The store was attracting al large number of children who! have to cross a busy intersection. The writer asked that considera- tion be given to the installation of traffic lights or some other warning to motorists The matter was referred to the police and public works commit- | tee.
