This event will By CLIFF GORDON That old number 13 proved the the first 20 minutes #s he fired nx game for the world champion it home on a pass from captain |trigger man on the lone goal of, tby Dunlops last night. The Dunnies dropped their first game in 13 starts as thay were edged 53 down in Belleville by the McFarlands. It was a terrific game with the McFarlands showing plenty of fight as they downed the high flying Whitby team. Playing coach Sid Smith was the big gun for the Dunnies as he fired all three goals, an has a big lead in that department for the league race. Payette paced the homesters with a pair of goals with single counters going to Dewsbury, Jopes and Smrke. It was a clean game with only: seven penalties, three to the Dunnies, The Dunnies will mvade the Kingston arena tonight to try aod get back on the win string as they play the Merchants at home. Then on Sunday the locals will be in Hull to plar the Canadiens, and right back here on Tuesday night with the same Ottawa-Hull team in the biggest atlraction of the season, featuring two of the best teams and along with that it will be Charlie Burns night in Whitby. ONLY GOAL The Dunnies scored the only goal of the first period as they appeared to have the McFarlands well in hand. Henderson in the local cage came up with a number of saves to hold the fort for the locals. Smith was the Harry Sinden. Al Dewsbury put the Macs back on even terms in the second period as he rounded out a three-way passing play with McLelland and Raglan, This appeared to be the spark the homesters needed. Payette from Brawn and Craw- ford at the 4:02 mark gave the homesters the lead for the first time In the game and the home fans were really starting to whoop it up TIES GAME The lead was very short lived however, as Smith came back just 31 seconds later and knotted it all up at 2 all as he flipped one home on a Tom O'Connor pas Payette again put the McFar- lands out frent at the 10:42 mark and this time it was for keeps. Jones from Payette and Marin. eau made it 4-2 as the teams skated off the ice for the end of the first 40 minutes of plav. Smith was again to the fore for the Dunnies as he put them right back in the game at the 4:11 mark as he sank a pass from Ted O'Connor. That was all the damage from a local standpoint however, as the rest of the fellows did not have any luck in the scor- ing range, Smrke, a former pro completed the scoring for the McFarlands at the 8:53 mark to give the Macs their first win of the season over the world champ- ion Whitby Dunlops. BLAIR One of the occupational hazards of having won the world championship and now leading the league by a goodly margin, is the terrific number of times the Whitby Dunlops are asked for opinions about pertinent hockey activities. Not the least of these lately have been the requests for comments on Kelowna's cur- rent tour of Russia, and Belleville's chances in the forthcoming world tournament at Prague. It has been said that there is noth- ing weaker than a man without an opinion. Usually we have an opinion about most things in hockey and if asked (we usually like to be told that its for publication, something Mr. Frank Orr of Cornwall should think about) we will give same, and stick by it. Of course nobody should expect that everyone is necessarily going to agree with your opinion, but that matters not. The thing is to at least have one. However, having given your opinion, when asked, it would seem only fair that it be reproduced in newspa- pers, etc., exactly as you gave it. illustrate a point in question! Two weeks back the Ke}- oar tee ool the CAHA for failing to give them ade- . quate help to strengthen their team before they left for Rus- sia. This blast came at the eleventh hour just before they de- parted for yon shores. Newsmen immediately called Mr, Bob LeBel, President of the CAHA for comment on the story as well as a few other people in hockey. One of the others, they called for a quote on the situation was yours truly. An ahbre- viation of our quote went something like this . . . "We think the Kelowna Packers are wrong in blasting the CAHA, since # is certainly not the CAHA's fob to obtain the personnel for their club. They have known since last May that they were going on this tour so it would seem a bit lafe to try and hang the lack of suitable replacements on somebody else's shoul- ders" . . . This oninion seemed quite clear to us. Put lo and behold that evening, a Toronte ncwsnaner carries a front pare story (not the sports page) with a heading which reads "Blair Sneers at Kelowna Packers As Thev Depart For Rvs. sian Tour" . . . Now how this paper (which leans a bit to the sensational element), can derive the idea "Sneering" out of our remarks Is beyond us. Of course it doesn't end here. George Dulmage, sports editor of the Toronto Telegram, reproduces a letter in his column a couple of nights back from a Mr. David Richard- son who says "it ill becomes Blair to belittle the efforts of Kelowna or to sneer at the present representation. If Kelowna should lose all their games I will still root for them." . . . Now all this is very well Mr, Richardson, excenting we cer- tainly were not sneering at Kelowna at all. This was an en- tively erroneous and unfair report carried in this Toronto newspaper. However, in getting to your statement that "you will still cheer for Kelowna should they lose all their games." we have something to say about that, It may be that you gain a great smug sense of self satisfaction out of your thoveht that even if these poor boys from Kelowna don't win a game you are still going to rah rah rah them on. Well, let's point out the real reason why you and hundreds of other Canad- fans can do this so easy right now. Its because Canada now holds the World championship, and we can afford to send these western boys on a nice little trip, even if they don't win so what? Its kind of nice to see the Russians win an odd game, now isn't it. Makes everything nice and chummy. Well, don't think the Whitby Dunlops ever went to Europe last year, with such nice little thoughts by the public. They were sent to bring the world championship back to Canada, and noth- ing less, and if they had failed the "sneering would still he going on for years to come. The boys had this challenge hung squarely on their necks. Get over there and bring it hack and no excuses, Well the Drmlops met this challenge and brought it back, but not before a tremendous amount of pressnre, tears, sweat, bawlings out, meetings etc, ete. Yes sir, Mr. Richardson, the "Dunnies" did that job, and you or nobody else 1s going to take that away from them now. Some thinns are just too gnicklv forgotten! That's the real reason why vou can root for Kelowna, even if they aren't beating the Russians, As manager of the team that did that job last year and knowing what went into bringing that title back, we just don't buy your Hitle story of self-righteousness. The bovs on the Dunlops took their lumps from vou Torontonians before they went, and we don't intend to see them take any more now that they've proved themselves, And while your rooting for Kelowna as they fall to heat Rrpsian league teams (not even their na 1 team) do von think this is making the Russian prblic mad! They're loving it. But it may amaze you to know that some of us Canadians have some pride about this. Certainly those of us who slaved to get our hockey pres. tige back. Now you go peddle your papers somewhere else my friend! THE TOWN AND COUNTRY *. . .
