6 THE DALY TIMES-QAZETTY, Seturdey, BY THE WAY Mey YTV, 1738 LP Closing Fire Hall Puts End To All Predictions By LLOYD ROBERTSON Last week we just about dis- located our elbow In self-congra- tulation on the accuracy of our predictions, and this week coun- ell upset the whole thing. They have decided to close the Port Whitby fire hall. Before the summer is out, they will probably hire a dog catcher and that will just about wash up the predictions for some time, However, we find that we were not the only one who was upset shout the fire hall decision. John Harkness, president of the Port Whitby Ratepayers Association took pen in hand and served notice that the bay area resi- dents were not taking kindly to gny suggestion that the fire fruck be moved uptown Not only that, but John Is spearheading a drive to get names on a petition asking that the truck be left there and the ,station be properly equipped NEW TOWN HALL But council did come through on ome point, They decided to build a new town hall on the Samuel Trees property. The de- cision came painlessly at a special meeting on Wednesday night, after councillors post- poned discussion at a late Mon day night meeting The problem yet to be settled is whether the police or fire hall will be included on the new site and what will become of the present half-block owned by the town where the present building stands, Some members of council Lave already passed opinions which ranged all the way from using half of it as a fire hall to tearing down the present building for a parking lot--to selling the whole lot for $80 000 We are not prepared to argue on the pros and cons of what should be done wilh the pres ent building as all suggestions seemed (o have merit But Mayor Harry Jermyn, while talking about parking space for patrons wishing to shop downtown, eame up with an ide# which we have never lieard expressed in coungd be fore 3 He suggested that the thon go, [purchase the back lots of the properties fronting on Brock and Dundas streets. These lots could be converted to metered park- ing lots, he said, and the siores could construct a rear entrance to allow patrons to park at the rear and walk right into the store, The whole scheme, he said, would cost about $75,000. He sug- gested that meter revenue from these lots, combined with a one- mill levy on the local downtown assessment would pay for the project ANOTHER IDEA It was obvious at the meeting that every member of council faced the task with an open mind and had given it a lot of thought, Presenting another new idea at the meeting was Coun- cillor Harry Inkpen, a freshman this year He had prepared his ideas on paper and they were that the Trees house be razed and a building suitable for administra tion office, PUC, Chamber of Commerce, Industrial Commis sion, etc, be built there. He had also reserved space for a new library and a police station He proposed a civic square, as did most members of council, and included in it space for the cenotaph, mow on Dundas St. E. He suggested that the fire hall could he moved to the site of the blanket factory on Brock St. N BY THE WAY . . . In case you think that service club mem- hers meet weekly for a steak dinner and a chat, that is not exactly the case although much good is accomplished through fellowship. All service club mem bers have to go out and work for the funds which are used in the charities. The Kiwanis Club of Whitby is taking on a particu. larily stern task. They have to get to work at 4 am, on Satur May 31, to help unload trucks bringing food to the Ral ston Purina opening, This will be no fishing trip and, in addi tion, all money they earn by the sweat of their brow will be turn. ed over to the club . We have not heard many good fish stories but we did learn that one Whitby fisherman made quite a splash Cavan way the other day day, out when he fell off the dam into 20 teet of water, Godfrey Schilling was fishing off the dam when he lost his balance and dropped | in , , . And back to Port Whitby again, where Mrs, Lorne Silver reports that mothers in the dis trict have been pressing for the parks committee to put some type of fencing along the Watson St. side of the park to prevent thoughtless motorists from driv- ing into the park and endanger- ing children's lives . . . Whitby's gasoline war has not stirred since the opening salvo when {about a half-dozen dropped the | price to 38.9 cents, Two opera ltors dared to drop to 37.9 but the bonanza (for motorists) 1ast- | ed less than one day and the price went back up to 38.9. Rumor has it that the operators involved are talking things over and the price may shortly go back to normal, Ah, 'twas nice while it lasted.
