= 71 MAIN ST. S, GEORGETOWN. (ENTRANCE OFF REAR PARKING LOT) 873-2441 There’s nothing quite like a tie to change the wording of a dismal streak. The, Georgetown Chrysler Raiders halted their 24-game losing streak Friday night with a 4-4 tie against the Burlington Cougars. However, the Raiders, who per- formed well in losing 6-4 to the Milton Merchants on Saturday night, are still winless in 26 games. ‘The tie leaves Georgetown with a 4-24-1 record (one of the wins was the reversal of a loss after the Caledon Canadiens used an illegal player in a win over Georgetown). However, the Raiders are only two points out of a playoff position. Georgetown trails the sixth-place Royal York Rangers by a single McKee’s goal breaks dubious string Tie ends Raiders losing streak point, with the top six teams in the seven-team Central Ontario Junior Hockey League East Division standings. However, if the playoffs were to begin next week, to qualify for the post season the Raiders must finish ahead of Royal York because the Rangers have beaten Georgetown in all three of their regular-season meetings. On Friday night, Jonathan McKee’s goal at the 8:16 mark of the third period lifted the Raiders into the tie and put an end to losing ways. Jamie Szyc had a busy night in the Georgetown goal, stopping 34 shots. Tan Ellis, Jeff Charney and Randy Bond had the other goals for the Raiders in a two-and-a-half hour game that featured but 16 total penalty minutes (with Burlington getting 10 minutes). On Saturday night, with former Georgetown goaltender Carmello Giurleo getting the start for Milton, the Raiders held a 2-1 lead heading into the second before the visiting Merchants took a 4-3 advantage into the third. Milton went ahead 6-4 before the third was seven minutes old, with Mike Murray’s short-handed goal standing up as the winner, before the Raiders’ rally ended with Trevor Brandt’s goal at 8:47. Brandt, the former Halton Hurricane AAA midget standout, finished the game by scoring the Raiders final three goals, including two on the power play. Captain Trevor Elinesky had the other. The Raiders return to league action Boxing Day, taking on on Dec. 28 before meeting Lindsay on Dec. 29. The 12-team tourna- ment will be divided into a pair of six-team divisions, with the top two ee during an action-packed street hockey game in Acton last week. By Alex Tough Merry Christmas and a god New year to all, hope you have a good one and I wish you all you would wish yourself. Both Halton and Industrial leagues have downed league darts for the present, until the holiday season is over. The "pub" league recommences in January and the Industrial has the Alf Oates tourney Night this Wednesday with the usual goodies, this year at the Oddfellows for the four-man teams. Last week, Industrial league leaders in the two divisions won their matches to retain the front running positions going into the new year. Hustlers and the Gasketmen Cutters defeated Panthers and Acadian Pools respec- tively by the same score, 7-2, to hold first division honors. Westenders took Steeprock 5-4 and High Rollers won 8-1 over Inter- County. In the second division, Dream Team won 8-1 over the Independents and Ensigns swal- lowed Firemen by 9-0. Georgetown will then take part in a junior tournament in Newmarket, taking on Mississauga and Milton Raiders await news about suspension ‘The next few days or so will be anxious ones for general Finn Poulstrup of the Georgetown Chrysler Raiders. Poulstrup is awaiting word from the Ontario Hockey Association on just how long Raider forward Bryan Gendron will be out of action. Gendron was handed a pair of match penalties in the Raiders’ game Dec. 10 in Caledon, a contest Georgetown lost 11-9. Gendron was handed match penalties for head butting and the molesting of an official. The head butting penalty is good for a four-game suspension and the molesting the official penalty carries a seven-game suspension. If the two are upheld, the earliest Gendron could return to action is Jan. 22. There is also the chance that the OHA, upon reviewing the incident, could add more games to the suspension. Procedure dictates that the Raiders would have to be informed of such a decision, which Poulstrup could appeal within a 30-day period. Poulstrup has sent the OHA a video of the activities from which Gendron was handed the head-butting penalty. It doesn’t depict the molesting the official incident. Gendron wasn’t dressed for both of Georgetown’s games last weekend. On Friday the Raiders tied Burlington 4-4 to end a 24-game losing streak before dropping a close 6-4 decision to Milton on Saturday. Poulstrup was clearly disappointed with the penalties. He said Gendron did not head butt his Caledon rival, and added the molesting the official penalty was purely an accident. “The linesman had got closer to Bryan and pushed him,’’ Poulstrup said. “Bryan instinctively turned around quickly to see who it was, and his stick accidently hit the official.” So, as much as Poulstrup would like to address the issue, his hands are tied until the OHA hands down a decision. Even then, Poulstrup thinks he can only appeal suspensions of six-or-more games, meaning the head- butting suspension would stand. “I'd love to appeal the head butting if I could because it never happen,” Poulstrup said. “The video we’ ve sent into the OHA, I think, shows that.”” Poulstrup said Gendron, who was given a double minor on the play for slashing and roughing, was reacting after he was slashed in the throat area. Gendron joined the Raiders after a three-plus seasons in the Ontario Hockey League with the Peterborough Petes and the Owen Sound Platers. The 20-year-old was drafted by Peterborough four years ago after playing for the Georgetown Gemini Jr. B club, which has since changed its name to Raiders. He was traded to Owen Sound earlier this year. clubs from each division advancing on to the semifinal round.
