Covi "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2001 -17 Author runs workshop for writers Uxbridge children's author Wendy A. Lewis has hung out in cemeteries, jumped from an airplane, and patrolled poacher- infested turtle nesting beaches in Costa Rica -- all to get at the heart of her stories. "I believe in chal- lenging limitations in writ- ing and life," says Lewis, who will be sharing her insights and encouraging other writers in her upcom- ing "Writing for Young People Workshops." The Introductory Level workshop gives beginning writers the basics of writing for young people from babies' board books to sophisticated teen fiction. In-class and take-home exercises are designed to tap into the inner child and get the creative juices flowing. This workshop will be held on Tuesdays from 6:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. for eight weeks starting January 15. The Advanced Level workshop for experienced writers provides a rigorous forum for critiquing and polishing their manu- scripts. Writers are chal- lenged to look at their characters in fresh new ways and delve deeper into their creative well. This workshop will be held on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. for eight weeks starting January 16. Both workshops will be held at Blue Heron Books in Uxbridge. Spring and Fall workshops will also be offered. "Graveyard Girl", Lewis' collection of linked stories for teens, won the Canadian Author's Association Vicky Metcalf Award for the Best young Adult Short Fiction pub- lished in Canada. Her novel for teens, "Freefall", which she describes as "part mystery, part poetry, and part skydiving manu- al" will be published in 2002, and her picture book for ages 4 to 8, "In Abby's Hands", will be published in 2003.
