Jan. 4th +S MoJack's report Balser gets the defense he needs By John B. McClelland Weekend Star The Port Perry MoJacks showed they are made of stern stuff Tuesday night as they pinned a 3-0 whitewash on the Lakefield Chiefs, a team that is in hot pursuit of the MoJacks for sec- ond place in the Central Junior C League standings. And the Chiefs, who have been at or near the top of the Central Loop over the last few seasons, have always been tough on their home pond where the playing surface is small and the tight boards give up weird bounces and rebounds. And what's more, the Mojacks were coming off a lacklustre showing just 48 hours before the Lakefield game when they were dumped 5-3 at the Scugog Arena by the Little Britain Merchants. So there were several factors that. could have worked against the green and white when they made the long bus trip to Lakefield. But they ignored them all by get- - ting some timely scoring from the "guys they count on to put the puck in the net, some great netminding by Matt Balser and an all-round strong defensive performance in front of their first-year keeper who along with Garett MacKinnon give the MoJacks the top goaltending tandem in the League. "Balser turned in an excellent game," said General Manager Murray Parliament. "But the team played very well in front of him. We were able to shut down efforts to get a rebound off the initial shots." - The MoJacks spread their three goals around, getting one in each period. And it was Andrew Mercer who got them going in the final minute of the opening frame. Captain Adam Jones built the lead to 2-0 when he found the range late in the second. And Mercer, with his sec- ond of the contest, rounded out the scoring with about two minutes to play in the game. This was one of those proverbial "four-pointers" as the win gives the MoJacks 31 points, three up on the Chiefs in the important battle for sec- ond place in the league standings. And the way the MoJacks were able to rebound after the loss to the Merchants sets the stage for their next outing this Sunday night (Dec. 16) when the Georgina Ice will be the opposition at the Scugog Arena. Not only can fans expect to see an exciting hockey game, this is the annual MoJack Family Christmas Night. There will be lots of lucky draw prizes for the kids and adults, a visit from St. Nick who will drop the puck for the ceremonial faceoff and some- thing new as well. All fans who make a donation of a new toy or non-perishable food item will be admitted to the game at half price. These donations will be turned over to the Durham Regional Police who will distribute them in time for Christmas to families in Scugog Township and the rest of the region. So why not enjoy the festive sea- son by bringing the entire family out to .the Scugog Arena Sunday night. See some fast, exciting Junior C hock- . ey, have the children meet Santa and bring along a new toy or food item to help brighten the smiles of the less fortunate at this special time of the year. Game time against the Georgina Ice, who are fourth in the standings, is 7 p.m. at the Scugog Arena on Reach Street. : The Port Perry Peewee First tournament try Peewee selects battle tight games The Peewees had their with help from Caitlin goals in net with help from Select hockey team played their first tournament of the season on Dec. | and 2 in Peterborough.
