Peter Hvidsten Weekend Star Scugog Township has turned down a request from Dr. Robert Kyle of the Durham Regional Health Department that calls for all municipalities in the region to ban AVISR@10] =) SN oil of Olay Cosmetics 1/2 PRICE Port Perry's Crablree & Evelyn smoking in restaurants. The township already has a bylaw in place that regulates smoking in the work place and public places. Ward | Councillor 17 Wel HEI & Larry Corrigan said he would like to see every business smoke free. "It's a no-brainer. Ward 4 Councillor David Dietlein said he had no objections to pro- moting a smoke-free environment. "There are enough places to go, so | just don't go (where there is smoking)," he said. But Mark Stephenson, the township's bylaw offi- cer, said it would be bet- ter to let the establish- ments regulate them- selves. Otherwise, "police or bylaw officers would have to patrol and enforce the law," he said. Council accepted Mr. Stephenson's recommen- dation that a ban on smoking in restaurants not be established. Councillors still among lowest paid From Page 1 the same hikes, but only their's will kick in a year later. "This formula will allow for smaller increases, rather than one big increase. It gives us a period of time to phase in the increases, the same as what the provincial and federal gov- ernments are doing," said Councillor Pearce. "This won't have that big of an impact on the budget because we're doing small increases each year." Councillors also okayed an increase which will see the maximum vision- care allowance for management and + council increased from $200 to $250 every 24 months; authorized the vehi- cle expense reimbursement rate to be increased from 35-cents per kilome- tres to 40-cents; and they approved a recommendation calling for the limit for vehicle expense reimbursements to increase from $1,500 per year to $1,700 a year, based on the new mileage rates. Staff were also asked to prepare the necessary by-laws necessary to autho- rize the execution of the collective agreement between the township and staff. Despite the raise in pay, Scugog's politicians will still remain among the lowest paid municipal representatives in the region. "Look at it this way: Brock is still a little lower than us, but we're basical- ly at the bottom of the heap." In comparison, Uxbridge councillors are payed an annual stipend of $14,845, plus a $1,000 bonus for sitting as a committee chair. In another finance matter, council authorized Ms. de Wit to proceed with the purchase of the house and proper- ty at 223 Water St. in Port Perry at a price not to exceed $175,000. The house, commonly known as the Bertrand property, is located directly south of the the Scugog Public Library. Purchasing this piece of land will give the township ownership of the entire waterfront from Birdseye Centre Park south to the baseball diamonds. 0 5 0 pA BOA PA RY Srey P------, eo - Nw ¥ 0 50> OFF FRAMES 1000'S of wood frames 5x7 GLASS 20%OFF « MATS 20% OFF CUSTOM FRAMES 20-50% OFF " CLEARANCE READY MADE to 24x48 Ni ASA SAI IAN 3 1, So You Name It...
