CY VOI 14 - "WEEKEND STAR" CAATD MAINZ FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2001 For the next clinic nearest you, call 1-800-841-2729 Take advantage of free flu shots, urges region With six cases of influenza A confirmed across Ontario, Durham Region Health Department officials are urging area residents to get their flu shot now to help prevent the spread of the flu. Influenza A is usually more severe than influenza B and can cause pneu- monia, leading to possible hos- pitalization and even death. "It takes up to two weeks for immunity to develop following vaccination," says Dr. Donna Reynolds, Durham Region Associate Medical Officer of * Health. "So it's important to get your flu shot as soon as possible ; to provide effective protection H b 0 throughout the season." As part of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care's second annual universal influen- za vaccination campaign, Durham Region Health Department is holding commu- nity flu vaccination clinics throughout the region. A total of 38 clinics will be held across Durham Region until Nov. 7. A clinic was held Thursday (Oct. 24) in Port Perry and another is scheduled to be held in Uxbridge on Oct. 27. According to statistics from a 2001 health department survey, 34 per cent of the general adult population received a flu shot last year compared to 9 per cent in 1999. In addition, 68 per cent of adults 65 years and older also had an influenza vaccination in 2000 up from 57 per cent for 1999, while almost 36 per cent of area residents 18 to 64 years of age with chronic diseases were vaccinated against the flu, repre- senting a |4 per cent increase over 1999. "Getting a flu shot can help you avoid getting the flu," explains Dr. Reynolds. "It. can also help to reduce the severity and duration of illness and stop the spread of others especially young children, the elderly and individuals with chronic dis- eases." In addition to the health department's free clinics, free vaccinations are available at doctors' offices and a number of area employers are also offering on-site clinics for their employ- ees. This has led to the introduction and growing popularity of Critical Illness Insurance. Unlike disability insur- ance, which replaces income with regular monthly payments, Critical Illness Insurance pays a one-time, tax free, lump sum. Critical Illness Insurance has been around since the early 1980s, but has really started catching on in Canada within the last five years. It covers many of the most serious medical con- ditions like cancer, heart attack, stroke, multiple sclerosis and kidney fail- ure. Many of the products available also cover other medical conditions such as: paralysis, major organ transplant, coronary bypass surgery, blindness and severe burns. Generally, the insured per- days after diagnosis of one of the specified condi- tions. «Then the - insurance: company pays the tax-free, lump sum, typically in the range of $50,000 to $500,000. Critical Illness Insurance is available whether or not you are working, making it an attractive option for parents who stay at home with small children. The cost of Critical Illness Insurance varies depending on the amount of coverage, personal fac- tors such as age, sex and whether or not you smoke. For example, a 40-year- old, male, non-smoker would pay about $40 per month for a $75,000 policy that can be renewed every 10 years.
