"WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2001 - 29 : Buisness Is target of crooks Police warn of Nigerian fraud letters The Durham Regional Police Major Fraud Squad is warning citi- zens about a fraudulent letter, fax and e-mail scam involving unclaimed bank accounts in Nigeria. Businesses in Durham Region have been receiving correspondence allegedly from bankers or directors of foreign federal ministries in 'Nigeria. The claim is that between $20 and $50 million U.S; dollars has been found in unclaimed accounts and these funds will be claimed by the Nigerian government if not trans- ferred into offshore accounts. The letters ask if they can transfer these funds into the private compa- . hy accounts of Durham businesses. In return for this favour, the local business would receive a percentage of the money, usually 35 per cent. A quick response is promised once the relevant banking informa- tion, company letterhead and blank invoices are signed, stamped and returned. Telephone and fax num- bers along with an e-mail address are also given so businesses can respond to the request. Project Phone Busters, a joint effort of the RCMP, OPP and munici- pal police agencies, is compiling a database in regards to these letters. They are interested in hearing from people who have made contact with anybody sending the letters. With the great suc- cess of the event and the very positive comments that were received following the evening, the Parks and Recreation Committee made recommendation that this tradition continue on a tri-annual basis (once per term of council). | On Nov. 22; 2001 the Township of Scugog will host its fourth Tri-Annual Recognition Awards Ceremony at the Scugog Centre Community adjacent to the Scugog Arena.
