UIA PIZZA, SUBS ° WINGS 905-985-8448 S a = : baa hE " Skane 83 Port Perry club readying for their 30th year Roster shaping up as MoJacks prepare for another season By John B. McClelland Weekend Star With the start of a new season just a 'week away, the Port Perry MoJack's lineup is nearly complete with the coaching staff now working to "fine-tune" the various forward and defensive pairings. MoJack's head coach Neal Evans told The Port Perry Star earlier this week that as of Wednesday, the club had signed 12 forwards, six defense and one netminder. And, Evans said he's very pleased with the players inked to cards for the start of the new season. Me "We had a lot of quality players out (to training camp) and | would. say we have had to cut five or six players who would have fit in (other years," he said. On the forward lines, Mojack veterans Ryan McQuade and Adam Jones make up the nucleus of what will be the "go-to" trio in terms of goal-scoring. Newcomer Darryl Steele on the right side will be the third member of this line. He's described as a strong, hard worker who should be able to * dig the puck out of corners. Another line consists of Mojack veter- ans Andrew Mercer and Jason Whitworth, teamed with newcomer Matt Harris, a native of Ops who also brings good size and strength to the position. Dane Grey, who played with the Port Perry Midgets last year, will team with ~ MoJack's veteran Justin Bennett and rook- ie Calum Marshall as another line. Marshall, who played AAA hockey in Oshawa last season, is described as a hard-nosed grinder-type player who is a strong fore-checker and likely will see penalty killing duties as well. Another line is made up entirely of returning MoJacks: Tyler Cameron and Jeff Ritchie, along with Jeff Ashton on the left side. Ashton played last year as a blue liner with the MoJacks. Coach Evans said the decision to move him to the left wing is because of his hard-driving, tenacious style which will be of benefit in the cor- ners and in front of the opposition's net. "And we can always move him back to defense, if needed," said the coach. The six blue liners signed to cards to date (the team will sign one more before the season opener) are Jordan Froates of Port Perry, Matt Skerratt of the Port Perry Midgets, Shawn Curran and Nathan Cotter, from last year's MoJacks, and Brent Stokes and Adam Mercer, who both played AAA Midget last season in Oshawa. The one netminder signed to a card as of mid-week is Oshawa native Matt Balser, an |8-year old who was a late cut from the Junior A Legionaires. Garrett Mackinnon and Jeff Rankine are left in camp to duel for the other netminder's card. Mackinnon is from Pickering and Rankine spent last season with the MoJacks. In recent pre-season action, the Mojacks defeated Bobcaygeon easily by scores of 8-2 and 9-2 and were doubled 6- 3 by the Lakefield Chiefs in which the "Chiefs scored all six of the goals on the power play. py The MoJacks were scheduled to play their final pre-season game in Little Britain Thursday night, and then will have a couple of long practise sessions this coming week to iron out as many bugs as possible before heading to Bobcaygeon on Sept. 28 for the first game of the real schedule. Their first home game is Sept. 30 at 2:30 p.m. with the Georgina Ice paying a visit to the Scugog Arena. Note the after- noon game time. Asked for a quick assessment of this year's squad at this time, Coach Evans said in his view the team speed is defi- nitely up a notch or two over last year, and there is no. shortage of "hustle and drive." He added that the coaching staff is going to need "some patience" in working with this young squad. Having said that, he noted, "I'm very happy with the team. I've been given something to work with." This is the start of the 30th season of Junior C hockey in Port Perry and the Mojacks goal is to earn a berth in the playoffs in the six-team league. The MoJacks finished fourth last season and then were swept aside in four straight by the Lakefield Chiefs, who in turn were defeated in a thrilling series by the Uxbridge Bruins. ---- a -- a. -----. a ' _ - BE .s)s Eh, A aa a eI
