Less than a year after travelling to Antarctica, the 18-year-old Prince Albert man has set his sights on the other end of the world. While he spends most of his time working at Port Perry Marina, Scott is also busy preparing for his upcoming adventure to the Arctic, which will begin in less than a month. Once again Scott, who will enter Grade 13 this fall at Port Perry High School, take advantage of the Students On Ice program, is planning to . which gave him the opportunity to travel to Antarctica last December with other high school students from across Canada. This time, however, he'll be travelling north. His itinerary calls for the students participat- ing in the trip to gather in Ottawa on Aug. 15, where they'll tour the city. Then they're off to Aylmer, Quebec, to the head offices of the Canadian Museum of Nature before returning to Qttawa, where they'll meet with the press. The following morning, the group will board a nine-hour flight to Nanisisik, at the northern tip of Baffin Island, and D124 14 5 @ Ha7s\ \ I) °4\V/ CLEAN D124 \V/ EH A \ You've Seen the Govemment Ads! After touching down in the remote community, the group will take a quick tour before board- ing the Akademik loffe, the Russian ship which they will call home for the next week. Once on board, the students will sail down the east coast of Baffin Island before steaming towards Devon Island, where they'll visit a num- ber of Inuit communities. From there, they'll head northeast towards Greenland, where they'll visit Disko Bay, home of the world's fastest mov- ing glacier (an estimated 30 metres per day). The group will then travel around Greenland's west coast, where they'll tour the world's longest fjord and then sail into the port city of Kanglussuak. The group will fly back to Ottawa on Aug. 26. For his first tour with Students On Ice, Scott signed on through the Durham District School Board. This time, howev- er, he applied directly to the agenay via the Internet, and will join stu- dents and other tourists from across the world, including those from Australia, Ireland, France, and Sweden. Seventy people are expected in total. "The idea of an Arctic trip was brought up when we were going to the Antarctic," recalled Scott. "Two months later, | saw it posted on the Internet and | applied and was accepted later, in March." Scott admits that his first trip last year stirred something inside him, and now he has turned his sights on a potential career involving the poles. "It's just the beauty of them and how the weath- er changes and the power of glaciers." He notes that after seeing one end of the globe, it's kind of required to see the other end, and the differences of each. " Antarctica is a conti- nent, with land under the ice; the arctic is just ice, there's no land," said Scott. "People live there on the small islands and there's polar bears there instead of penguins and there's lots of vegetation and flowers." However, such a trip doesn't come without an impressive price tag: Scott currently has about $2,500 which will go towards the trip, but will need to work hard and get plenty of support to reach the required $5,600 mark by mid-August. He's asking that any- one who can help him reach his goal of travel- ling to Antarctica on this unique educational tour to give him a call at 905- 985-8716.
