8 - "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, JULY 13, 2001 Uxbridge Concert Band tunes up for 10th season This year marks the 10th season of the Uxbridge Community Concert Band. The ensemble was formed during the summer of 1992, and the small band of players rehearsed out of an unfinished comer of the Testa Professional Building. This year, the ensemble has almost 40 members, and looking at the membership, you can easily tell that word has spread about this summer band. The group was originally formed as a way for students to keep practicing and playing during the sum- mer months. The band has always ceased rehearsing at the end of August to allow students to return to their school groups. They have never deviated from that plan, only begin- ning their rehearsals once the schools' spring concerts are completed. The first ensemble was a small group of students from Grade 8 through to Grade 13, with the occasional adult member joining in. Most of the players came from the Uxbridge area. Today, members range from Grade 6 beginners to senior citizens who love to play music. There are high school students, uni- versity students, teachers, and office work- ers all performing together, For the first time in 10 years, the UCCB has representatives from all four high schools in North Durham, as well as students who attend school in York Region. Players from Newmarket also make the trek to Uxbridge to play with this enthusiastic group of musicians. The nature of the group changes from summer to summer, and music is selected to cater to the abilities and strengths of the ensemble. This year, the ensemble.is partic- ularly strong, and will be performing impor- tant concert band works such as Holst's Second Suite in F and John Philip Sousa's Semper Fidelis, along with almost a dozen other works. Their final concert can be heard on Sunday, Aug. 19 at the Uxbridge Seniors' Centre. Other performances jnclude a tradi- tional concert-in-the-park at the bandshell in Palmer Park, Port Perry on Aug. 12 and a full recital in Stouffville on Saturday, Aug. 18. Since its foundation, the band has been under the directorship of Steffan Brunette. For more information, please contact Steffan Brunette at 905-852-7854.
