Members of the association, the bar- gaining group representing officers and . civilian employees below the rank of Staff Sergeant, have ratified a contract that will see salaries for officers rise to the provin- cial average during its four-year duration. 'The contract, retroactive to July 1, 1999, will see the base salary of a First-Class Constable go from $56,868 a year to $64,100 by 2003. Police Assaciation president Terry Ryan told The Star other benefits have either - been maintained or held at levels accept- ~ able to "a large portion of our members." "All we ever asked for was to be paid at the average provincial level," Mr, Ryan said, "Not all our members are delighted ~ at the contract, but that's democracy. A - - large portion feel it's the best deal we've been offered." Mr. Ryan said it would bé premature to assume that the contract will help ease fl long-standing tensions between Durham Police brass and rank-and-file officers. At Is Your Lawn Safe for Pets? 4... "I think it is too early for us to tell if a change in atti- tude has taken place," he said. At the very | least, officers will have a sense of stability in their work- ing atmosphere that's been lacking in the . past, he said. "This will be the first time in several years that we have a contract that will be in place for three years," Mr. Ryan said. "That will give a consistency and an ability to plan to our members, and | feel it will be a boost in our ability to lure good offi- cers to the Durham Regional Police Service," he said. °° | "Polfcing in Ontario is in transition, and So are we."
