SENIORS DAY 5% DISCOUNT There's still a few spots available Durham Rowing Club now offering summer camps By Chris Hall Weekend Star Lake Scugog will be the training ground for local rowing enthusiasts this summer. The Durham Rowing Club's summer rowing camps are now underway, and they're attracting interest from across the region. The first'camp for 2001 kicked off on Monday this week, and a handful of youngsters from across Durham Region took advantage of the 'opportunity to learn one of the fastest growing sports just off the shores of Lake Scugog. The camps run from 9 am. to | p.m. each weekday, and are open to both boys and girls between the ages of I1 and 17. The local rowing club is located in Port Perry, at the north end of Old Rail Line near the public boat launch. "We give them a tour of the boathouse and go over things such as water safety, basic techniques and care of the boats," explained Christine Foskett, program manager of the club's rowing camps. "We give them a basic introduction to rowing and make sure they have lots of fun on the water. At the end, everyone gets a certificate acknowledging their completion of the camp." The five-day camps run through July and August. The final camp will be held the week of Aug. 20. Those taking part in the camps are put to work in both four- and eight-man boats. Up to eight students are accepted into camp each week; there are still vacancies left for each week this summer. "It's good exercise, a confidence "builder and hopefully if they like it the camp will get them into the sport," said Ms. Foskett. The cost for the camp is $120 per week. A four-day camp will be held in August because of the Civic Holiday. The cost for that week is $95. Attending the camp as guest instruc- tors are Diana Earle and Jessica Near. Anyone wishing to register for a sum- mer rowing camp is asked to call Durham Rowing Club at 905-259-7699.
