Andrew Barlow becomes Deacon First-ever ordination takes place at St. John's Church By Heather McCrae" Weekend Star A bit of history took place in the tiny hamlet + of Blackstock last week. For the first time in its 150-year history, St. John's Anglican Church held an ordination for one of its own. It was also a first for the church to have its own deacon. Despite the heat, the little church was practi- cally full as local well wishers, and some as far away as - Toronto, Niagara-on-the-Lake and. Mr. Barlow says he has always been involved in the Anglican Church and, at one time, in his youth had thought of going through to be a priest. "But, then I pursued psychology and am now a psychologist working with young offenders in the city," he says. "So now | am pursuing that initial dream, sort of, and am now a vocational dea- con instead of the parish priest." Trent/Durham Bishop Douglas Blackwell and the Reverend Hugh Kernohan, who has been the part-time minister at the rural church for the last six years, led the pompous ceremony. There is no stipend paid to a deacon. A dea- con's role is to be a ser- vant within the church. "It's wonderful having a deacon for the first time in the church," Rev. Kernohan said.
