Organized by the Cartwright Sports and Recreation group, the contest is open to local ball players 13 years of age and younger. The Canadian-wide contest, which is sponsored by Honda and the Toronto Blue Jays (although no players form the local major league ball club will be there), will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, and continue until 2 p.m. Each participant will take partin three activities They will have three chances to hit a ball off a tee, with points award- ed for distance; they'll have two attempts to run the bases while being timed; and will get two opportunities to show off their throwing skills. Winners from each province in each age group will earn the chance to go to Toronto with a parent or guardian to see the Baseball Canada Final on Sept. 22 Registration is $5. All who sign up will receive various sou- venirs. As well, hotdogs, ham- burgers and drinks will be sold during the day, with all pro- ceeds going towards the Cartwright Field project. Top anglers from across Ontario are expected Bassmania Classic's this weekend This weekend top anglers from across Ontario will travel to capture first place at the first of five Bassmania Regional two day qualifying events on Lake Scugog out of Palmer Park in Port Perry. This year the participants include the Bassmania Classic IV Champions Garnet Armitage and Larry Courtice; the team known as the "Untouchables" Mike Miller and Jim Manolakos competing to defend their Lake Scugog Championship title; the All Canadian Champion Jarrod Dean; and television celebrities Leo Stakos and Steve Jojos from the Fish On Show: as well as the many anglers from the Port Perry community. Every season Bassmania and its anglers enjoy coming to Port Perry for its great fishing, the community spirit and support and the exquisite Palmer Park. The floating weigh-in stage together with the grand- stand allows great spectator participation.
