Ss ilglil Bu "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, June 2001 -§ By Chris Hall eekend Star Organizers of the fifth annual Sick Kids' Yard Sale, which will be held this weekend, are putting out a call for vol- unteers. Almost everything is in place for the fundrais- ing event, says Brian Pawlin, except for volun- teers. "Boy, do we need vol- unteers," he told The _ Star on Tuesday. "We've got stuff coming out of the garage already; the items are everywhere. "But we're missing a few people from other Annual fundraiser is this weekend years, so we're a bit short-staffed. We've got some high school stu- dents who are helping out for their community work, but we've only got about 80 per cent of the. volunteers back from last year." The Sick Kids' sale will be held Saturday and Sunday this week- end, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The popular fundraiser has collected close to $20,000 over the past four years, all of it going to the Sick Childrens' Hospital in Toronto. The yard sale is held the same weekend as the hospital's annual telethon. In total, $8,347 was raised last year, and organizers are hoping to top that amount in 2001. Donations to the sale have once again been generous, and local merchants are to be thanked for their contri- butions to the sale, said Mr. Pawlin. As well, there will be: a raffle and silent auc- tion; up for grabs are Toronto Blue Jays tick- ets, a sculpture from Native Focus, patio chairs and much more. "We have to say thank Volunteers needed for Sick Kids' sale you to everyone who donated 'again this year. All this stuff is great," said Mr. Pawlin. There will also be kids' games and activi- ties to keep the young- sters occupied, he added. The event will once again be held at the home of Bob Smith and his wife, Heather, at 16950 Old Simcoe Rd. near the Scugog soccer fields. As for anyone wishes to volunteer, Mr. Pawlin - says they can either phone 985-7870 or 985- 1957 or just show up.
