"WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, JUNE, 2001 - 3 Parks and rec director presents diagram of new public pool Plans for new outdoor pool unveiled, endorsed By Chris Hall Weekend Star Members of the town- ship's parks and recre- ation committee have endorsed plans for a new outdoor pool in Port Perry. Parks and Recreation director Jay Todd pre- sented the committee with plans for the pool Monday. He was given the go-ahead to proceed with the project. Plans for the pool, which will replace the for- mer Birdseye Pool, seemed to impress most councillors. The pool will sit approximately where the old pool sat, but will be situated north-south instead of east-west. A large decking area will surround the pool, and the old changerooms will be saved. They'll be renovated, and an enlarged reception area will also be added. The south end will be the shallow end (about two feet deep), and will include a childrens' splash pad area. Separating the two ends will be a built-in ramp to accommodate the handi- capped or elderly. The deep end will be up to eight feet deep. Most trees in the area of Birdseye Park near the proposed pool will be saved, although the existing playground equipment will have to be moved. Betz Pools, a Stouffville company, has been working in partner- ship with the township to design the pool. It is expected to cost more than $300,000, and will From Page 1 was the fact that they were informed that the government is clawing back the amount of money they would be providing Durham schools. "We were told that the Durham Region grants for education were going down... but they're col- lecting $228,000. more from us. The grants to the kids going to school here are going down, but the amount of education taxes they're collecting are going up," said Councillor Pearce. "We're raising more money locally, and it's not being used in the area where it's being raised." Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt suggested that Lower rate still means bigger tax bill for some township officials send a letter off to Durham MPP John O'Toole. "This is serious. We should put together a strongly worded letter to our MPP. If that extra money was benefitting classrooms here, then we may not be as outraged as we are now," he said. Ward | Councillor Larry Corrigan also sup- ported writing Mr. O'Toole. He said if grants to Durham Region stu- dents continue to fall, small schools such as Epsom Public School and Cartwright High School may be in danger. "They may be at risk with this type of govern- ment direction," he said. Councillors agreed to have a letter to the Durham MPP drafted and sent out.
