"In 1998-99, Ontarians spent a total of 561,433 days in hospital because of injuries due to uninten- tional falls, while 555 Durham Region residents 65 and older were hospi- talized as a result of injury from falling," says Joan Segal, a public health nurse with Durham Region Health Department. Durham Regional Health Department has a number of resources that provide helpful tips on preventing falls, including a pamphlet entitled "It's Time to Prevent Falls," a I2-tip resource guide for older adults. "People over 65 make up 12 per cent of the pop- ulation in Canada and account for 9 per cent of Durham Region's total population," says Ms Segal. "Older adults are vital, contributing members of our community. We want to provide information and assistance that allows them to remain active and independent. Encouraging seniors to maintain an active lifestyle and helping them to reduce the risk of falls will go a long way in helping them to retain their inde- pendence."
