FRIDAY, MAY 4, 200 - 27 It's a Canadian Cancer Society event Cancer survivors to take part in Victory Lap celebrations Local cancer survivors are invited to take part in the Survivors' Victory Lap during the Canadian Cancer Society's Relay For Life event coming up June | and 2. Cancer survivors will celebrate their victory over the disease with a ceremonial lap around the track at Oshawa Civic Fields to kick off the event the Friday evening at 8 p.m. "The lap gives survivors an opportunity to share their success and inspire others who are living with cancer, as well as thank everyone who helped them with their bat- tle," said Gerry Collyer, a volunteer with the society who is organizing survivor participation. As a cancer survivor himself Collyer will be partici- pating in the Victory Lap. He will be joined by renowned Canadian jockey Sandy Hawley, Honourary Chair of the Relay For Life Durham. : Relay For Life is a 12-hour non-competitive overnight relay that will raise money for the battle against cancer. Teams of 10 to 12 people will run or walk continuously through the night. The track at Civic Fields will be lit by luminaries, candles which can be purchased for $5 each. They are dedications to people who have won the battle against cancer or those who have died from the disease. Luminaries are on sale through local Royal Bank branches in Durham or your local Canadian Cancer Society office. People interested in taking part in any aspect of Relay For Life can contact the society at 905-725-1166 or 905-686-1516. Relay For Life Durham is one of 25 such events being held in communities across Ontario in June by the Canadian Cancer Society. The Bay is the provincial sponsor of Relay For Life.
