"WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, MAY 4, 2001 - 19 Details on the fair are now available Sebi, Time to start thinking about the Uxbridge Fall Fair Uxbridge Fair Board Vice-President, Dave Dickie, has announced details of the new "Garden Tractor Event" which will take place from 11 am. to 3 p.m. on the Saturday of the 2001 fair, Sept. 9. "If you think your lawn- mower is just for cutting grass, think again," said Dave. "We are turning a weekend chore into a com- petitive sport. There will be three classes of compe- tition: jo o Blind Mans Bluff (Backseat Driver) - one blindfolded driver with one navigator sitting in a trailer will traverse an obstacle course; fastest time with least faults wins a Slowest Mower (Power Snoozing) - slowest mower over a 20 foot course wins a Yard Mess Obstacle Course - with a backup with trailer to add to the challenge. "The competition will have three divisions," con- tinued Dave, "open divi- sion, open to persons age 12 or older, a service club division for service groups in the Uxbridge area, and a commercial division, open to representatives of any business serving Uxbridge. The entry fee for each class will be $2 with half the fees being donated to the Children's Wish charity and half split between the win- ners. Each mower.and dri- ver will receive free admis- sion to the fair." The goal of the event will be for everyone to have fun safely, Dave said, and the event will have a number of rules to help ensure a safe experience. For example, the machines must be factory lawnmow- ers or riding mowers, all cutting apparatus must be removed or disabled, all drivers and riders must wear CSA approved hel- mets (e.g. hockey hel- mets), and the machines must generate no more than 18 h.p. A complete. list of the dos and don'ts can be obtained by calling the fair information num- ber. "Mower power to 'em'," commented Dave as he urged fair board members to get the word out so that competitors can begin planning for this exciting new event.
