ars 20 + "WEEKEND STAR? 1 Throne speach sets out clear Speech from the Throne I am pleased with the excel- lent turnout Friday, April 20, for the Post Throne ° Speech Breakfast in Bowmanville. You can pick up your copy of the Throne Speech at the John O'Toole Constituency Office at 75 King Street East, Bowmanville. Or, check out the highlights and link to the complete text at my website - johnotoolempp.com In my view, the 2001 Throne Speech is one of this govern- ment's most important initiatives, because it clearly sets out our 21 steps into the 21st Century. It shows that we have the leader- ship and the commitment to guide Ontario not only through the economic mountains and plateaus, but also the valleys. The key message is our Throne speech is growth, accountability, and fiscal respon- sibility. These concepts will be hotly debated and criticized by the opposition and the special interest groups who want to maintain the status quo. But, | urge you to read the highlights and the document for yourself. Make your own informed deci- sion, and let me know what you think. ! Ontario Launches Pollution Hotline The Ontario government kicked off Earth Week by launch- ing its toll-free, 24 hour public hotline for reporting acts of pollu- tion. The service is available now by dialing 1-866-MOE-TIPS (1- 866-663-8477). This hotline will be used to gather tips on new Staying and emerging issues affecting our environment. Callers may choose to remain anonymous and may also use the following email address:moe.tips@ene.gov.on.ca. By May 2000, Ministry pollu- tion prevention = programs reduced toxic substances and wastes by 400,000 tonnes. Send Me Your Comments On New Financial Services Watchdog As you may have read or heard, I will' be leading a two month consultation into the cre- ation of a new financial services regulator for Ontario. The Government of Ontario has pro- posed a merger of the Ontario Securities Commission and the Financial Services Commission of Ontario into a single agency. This consultation paper and: draft legislation, if passed, would mean that areas such as insur- ance, stock investments, mort- gages, pensions and banking would all be handled by a single regulator known as the Ontario Financial Services Commission. Finance Minister Jim Flaherty announced the consultation process last week and added that he looks forward to tabling this legislation in the autumn session of the legislature. Province wide input from con- path for 21st Century sumers, investors and financial institutions is welcome, with the deadline for submissions June 29, 2001. As MPP for Durham, | know how difficult it can be for the small investor or the consumer who wants to resolve complaints and concerns with big financial institutions. I trust that I can count on your input as we look into the role of a financial ser- vices regulator in the future. For more information visit "www.gov.on,ca/fin/english/pub- seng.htm. You can also check out the John O'Toole website at johno- toolempp.com, where we have a direct link to information about the proposed changes to regulat- ing financial services in Ontario. I look forward to hearing from you. 565 Hwy 7A, Port Perry | | eouren 1894 Scugog St., nila 5) 9 SRR Ra Port Perry Plaza Port Perry 905-985-9777 .
